I see two more things happening. Arizona has an abortion rights measure on the ballot this year and when that happened in Ohio voters turned out that hadn’t voted in years - if ever. While they’re there these same voters may well decide to vote for Harris/Walz and maybe mark D all the way down the ticket. Ohio has an anti gerrymandering measure this year and it seems to be very popular. Maybe the same thing will happen.

@CHAS said in So what are the odds we'll avoid a recession?: "Surprise jump in retail sales casts aside recession fears Retail sales rose 1 percent in July, reversing a June slowdown and marking the largest jump in more than two years." https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/2024/08/15/retail-sales-consumer-spending-walmart/?utm_campaign=wp_post_most&utm_medium=email&utm_source=newsletter&wpisrc=nl_most&carta-url=https%3A%2F%2Fs2.washingtonpost.com%2Fcar-ln-tr%2F3eb8082%2F66be2803b75d8304b4ea9f7f%2F597299149bbc0f1cdce763b8%2F19%2F52%2F66be2803b75d8304b4ea9f7f The no-paywall version: https://www.msn.com/en-us/money/markets/surprise-jump-in-retail-sales-casts-aside-recession-fears/ar-AA1oRi93 Now I'll go read it....

This sounds like possible overreach on behalf of both the plaintiff and Disney. I'm uncertain how a failure by what I suppose is a tenant restaurant becomes the responsibility of the leasing party, in this case, Disney. It seems like the common strategy in liability cases to sue everyone in sight. On the other hand, the proposed defense and resort to what would seem to be an unrelated arbitration clause in a seemingly unrelated transaction would be only further temptation to impose arbitration for almost all transactions with a party for any reason forever after. The pernicious creep of arbitration already threatens the rights of individuals to pursue legal action in many, perhaps most, dealings with corporations imposing terms of service. Big Al

I think I have mentioned before, but I have genetic high cholesterol (unmedicated, it's in the 300's). Several years ago, my lipidologist put me on an injectable med called Repatha. It's an every two week shot you self-administer (kind of like an EpiPen). That, in combination with a low dose statin, has my total cholesterol in the 90's, and my LDL at 21.

No evidence of a coherent economic policy in these proposals. A Trump/Vance administration sounds like a recipe for economic chaos. Big Al

I haven’t listened (can’t stand to) but I’ve read it had to do with compression algorithm X was using. But then wouldn’t Elon’s speech sound the same?

Getting back to the 60 Minutes piece a bit...it focused on distressed companies that are acquired by private equity groups who try to turn them around. What Stavros is doing is sharing the profits with employees if the company becomes successful. He's also trying to get other investment groups to do the same. Not just the investors making money, but also saving jobs and improving the economic lives of the people in the company...

I never invested in real grow lights and simply used my fluorescent, and later LED, shop lights to grow orchids in the basement. Those did OK, but the orchids are all long gone because I got tired of taking care of them. Shop lights that don't have bulbs with the proper spectrum don't work very well; the seedlings are usually pretty spindly. When I've looked at what a decent setup would cost, I haven't wanted to spend that much money. I just buy the veggie seedlings I need from a nursery or direct sow seeds into the garden.
