The new safety features cars have are a minor miracle. I doubt the lives they've saved and injuries they've prevented can be counted.

@wtg Thanks for posting that, wtg. I really needed it after the NYTimes' distasteful decision to run Andrew Sullivan's diatribe against the LGBTQ community today. Why they thought publishing a litany of hyperbole and anecdotes attacking the community under the headline "How The Gay Rights Movement Radicalized, and Lost Its Way," on the anniversary of Obergefell was a good idea, I can't fathom. Other than the insatiable desire for clicks. It was the last straw for me. Coming on the heels of their couching an endorsement for Cuomo in their "non-endorsing" editorial, and the general descent of their online front page into bland, very "safe" but clickbait headlines, the sum of which leaves one completely unaware of the horrifying situation the US finds itself in, I decided to cancel my subscription.

@Piano-Dad It’s rare to replace one of those roofs. What usually happens is they take off the tile, put new waterproofing paper down and put the tile back again. Nice house!

I think I’m in the piano market again. My 9 foot vintage Mason & Hamlin needs a new action, but more than that, if I suddenly died, my wife would be tasked with trying to get rid of it…not easy for a concert grand. I’m looking for a smaller M&H or Steinway, preferably golden-age and well rebuilt. I’ve found there are all kinds of resellers out there, particularly in Westchester and environs. I’ve already missed out on some nice ones…those from $15K-$25K sell fast.

@Bernard It was fortunate in one way. The storm occurred near the end of May so the weather otherwise was fairly mild. It's hard to access the panes on a glass building that large. It took them most of the summer before they completed the repairs and all the portions of the buildings could be reopened to the public. Big Al

There was an NPR broadcast a few years ago about a cache of old cylinders of off-color humor that were supposed to have been destroyed under the Comstock Act, but somehow survived intact. I’d love to hear them but the culture was so different back then that they might vary from cringey to hard to comprehend.

It's most probably federal law that's it's visible. I can't remember a car except my '64 Beetle that didn't have it. I always assumed it was for law enforcement reasons.
