I realize I'm approaching seven-oh in a few years but it seems to me my mindfulness is still pretty much altogether.

So I went grocery shopping this afternoon. As is my want in the summer, I left the house via the front door. That door has a screen door and as usual, the inside wooden door was left open and the screen door unlocked. That's partly because I don't have a key for the screen door, and it's just what I've always done. Even all the years living in NYC, I always left my apartment unlocked when I wasn't there. (The building's front door, of course, was locked.)

So when I got home, 2.5 hours later, I left the groceries by the kitchen entrance and went around to the front door to enter the house. That's because when I leave via the front door, the kitchen door is almost always locked. But the front screen door was locked! I don't know how this could have happened. It's impossible to close it if the lock latch is down, and if by chance one uses enough force to close it in locked position, it automatically unlocks. So I had to go back to the kitchen entrance realizing I'd have to move a large object to find the hidden key, but when I got there the door was unlocked and slightly open. Cue Twilight Zone music.

I can imagine forgetting to close and lock the kitchen door, that happens once in a while. But I cannot imagine how the front screen door got locked since it can only be locked from the inside unless one has a key.

I haven't found anyone hiding anywhere yet, hope it stays that way.

    The industrial revolution cheapened everything.

That is most odd. I wonder if someone did come into the house, locked the front screen door, and unlocked the kitchen door for an escape route.

      Have you found anything missing?

@wtg Those were my immediate thoughts as well. No, nothing is missing that I can see. Laptop and camera are still on my desk. To be honest, I don't have too much that would interest robbers unless they were into very old things. Nothing appears out of place.

So somehow, the front screen door got locked. I haven't figured it out yet.

@Bernard ugh, that’s the kind of thing that drives me crazy.

I find that I sometimes did something I had no recollection of, I think it’s a matter of attention. My mind is on other things, and my body is on autopilot.

So for important things m, I try to focus, and maybe even say “ok it’s Sunday, I’m locking to front door as I head out to the grocery store.”

And that seems to help. Mostly! 😅

I suggest for your own piece of mind you simply lock your doors.

After a night's rest, I think it's safe to say I was most likely the culprit. Leaving the house had not been completely straight forward. After getting outside and part way across the lawn, I thought I'd heard Cielo call, so I went back to the screen door to check. On my second pass across the lawn, I realized I'd forgotten my shopping list. Ugh. I went back in via the screen door and it's very likely I automatically locked it once inside because it's just such an ingrained habit. I remember walking through the dining room to the kitchen where the list was, but I have no recollection of which way I exited the house again! Hm. I would have thought I'd gone back out through the screen door, but it's possible I left through the kitchen door. Shrug. I do have a recollection of walking through the kitchen at some point.

I’m guessing you went out the back door. I do a lot of things on autopilot, too! And wonder how I got where I got…
