@CHAS said in A musical update: Can you find out why the others cancelled? Probably but I don't want to bother the organizer too much. I suspect that maybe some of them are sick, and others maybe just weren't ready (they're college students in the music program here). It sounds like this concert had a smaller number of performers to begin with, so maybe the Nov. concert will be ok since there are more people on the program...

Very faint to nonexistent here in NYC, doubtless because of all the ambient city lights (and we are 8 miles from Manhattan, in the least populous borough).

Cool. An old friend was the one who found Mallory's body on that earlier search team.

I like the corgis. There are corgis nearby and one half corgi that loves to fetch. Would have a Corgi or a Bassett Hound, but allergies. My Scottie is also short in the legs, but I have fewer allergy problems with him.

That was an excellent report on a largely unseen part of the "deep state." As you no doubt recall, I live in the Pittsburgh region. The hill opposite downtown across the Monongahela River was called Coal Hill for a long time before getting the more upscale name of Mount Washington. I've worked on a facility adjacent to the Bureau of Mines location where Chris Mark worked. The Bureau of Mines headquarters was adjacent to CMU where I earned my degrees. A significant part of my career involved coal preparation plants, coal-fired power plants, and coke ovens. Coal and coal mining have been of interest and concern to me almost all of my life. Nonetheless, that story told me quite a bit that I didn't know and reinforced opinions I held about some companies involved in the mining industry. The changes in the regulatory environment that will flow out of the overturn of "Chevron deference" by the US Supreme Court are likely to be more impactful to the citizenry as a whole than the overturn of "Roe v. Wade." The weakening of the ability of government agencies to study problems like mine roof falls and promulgate solutions will be greatly inhibited. Big Al

So do I. I've actually done something like that when I've gotten the guys from the scam call centers in India. I ask them a question or say something that throws them off their script. It's fun to see how they react. Alternatively, I will occasionally answer in Lithuanian. Hilarity often ensues.

These types of thefts had become almost commonplace in California on trains coming out of the ports in Long Beach and Los Angeles. Big Al

We’ve had below freezing temps already at night for awhile. But it’s still nice during the day.

Heard high school administrators talking years ago. They must have forgotten I was nearby. Nothing stupid coming from that crowd will ever surprise me.

I suspect many of those large RVs were bought by people that have never had to park a pickup truck in a parking lot. They did not know what they were doing. I do know that many of those pulling travel trailers do not know what they are doing. They only know their pickup can pull the trailer. The trucks ability to manage a wayward trailer in the wind, etc. are often inadequate. Watch out.
