Speaking of vaccines

I had my second Shingrix last week. Easy peasy, and I had the usual chuckle over the buildup of apprehension over it (the idea always seems worse than the bite.).
I got the vaccine around 1 pm and I was fine the rest the day. In fact, I was feeling smug about not having any side effects and sort of boasted about it on another site.
Well. I woke up a few hours after I'd gone to bed with chills just about to the point of physically shaking, weakness, aches, nausea. I'd spoken too soon. It hit me hard and I was under the weather for 2.5 days, although only the first night was really bad.
But it is done and I'm glad for it.

I went in last week for something unrelated and my doctor let me know I was due for my tetanus so I got that. I was up to date on everything else. Then he went through all the things they will do next year (I’ll turn 50), including the Shingles and pneumonia vaccinations. Recently just got my first mammogram (apparently they lowered the age in Ontario to 40 but I didn’t realize it so I was long overdue) and then had to do a follow up ultrasound (nothing to worry about, thankfully, but now I’m on a once a year schedule for both). Isn’t aging fun?
@Daniel. I don’t believe there is a Hep C vaccination, unfortunately.

Just as another data point, I’ve had all of those vaccines and never had an issue with any of them.
Got COVID, went to bed, slept like 18 hours, and it went away. That’s how I deal with most illnesses and I was very glad that it worked.
Just so no one gets scared off.

For those who suffered through the shingles vaccine, some good news.
Last April I wrote a Ground Truths entitled “The Shingles Vaccine and Reduction of Dementia.” At the time many were unaware of this unanticipated relationship based on 2 large natural experiments. Two new studies this week have advanced our understanding about the potential biological impact of the Shingles vaccine, independent of its effects for preventing Shingles or direct action vs. herpes zoster virus and reinforced its protection from dementia, ~80% of which is attributable to Alzheimer’s disease. In this post I won’t get into the details of what I previously wrote (please link back for more perspective), but instead devote the text to the new findings.
