Yeah. I’ll start waiting for the receipt, which I always decline.

This is another one that I saw a few days ago.

              https://www.nbcphiladelphia.com/news/local/scammers-offering-help-with-pumping-gas-charge-victims-cards-after-theyre-gone/4372049/

Anyone walking over and offering to help me with pumping the gas would raise red flags for me immediately, so I don’t think I’d fall for it. But it amazes me that these crooks are so ingenious.

That screw is very subtle. I don't think I would spot it. The best advice was in the comments to be sure the pump resets after you hang up the nozzle.

My wife got skimmed at a gas station a few years ago. She still had her receipt and was able to secure restitution from the bank, but it took awhile because she had used her debit card. Now she only uses a credit card at non-bank ATMs and other payment locations.

I plan to get receipts and never let anyone approach me and I'll make sure the pump resets.

At almost $5 I don't doubt scammers are as ubiquitous as mosquitoes.
