I’ve found today and yesterday that my layers and hats etc work fine. It my fingers and toes that give out first. I had to stop and warm my fingers at least once over the course of an hour+ outside.

Just before we moved here a friend gave me this goofy hat, saying it seemed like something I’d need. He thought it was hysterically funny.

It’s been in a drawer for four years - no way I was going to wear such a thing. But today I busted it out and - dayum! It really works! Way better than a stocking cap!

@Steve-Miller Mr SK has a hat just like that, he got it when I was in grad school and we lived "up north." For truly cold weather, it can't be beat.

@jon-nyc do you have something like these?

      alt text

They are another Mr SK must-have item from our "up north" days.

No but I have boots. They did fine yesterday but today I found myself standing in snow for extended periods of time.

I think I need thermal mittens. I don’t really need gloves to shovel.

Or hand warmers. There are disposable and rechargeable ones.

I was outside again today for about an hour (working on getting things down to the pavement so that it won't freeze, because it will be too cold for salt to work, and that's all we have).

Anyway, it was pretty cold but the sun was out. I was wearing these orthopedic shoes, they're backless but they have very thick soles. Yesterday, I was wearing boots, but these thick soles were much better. Funny what makes a difference.

We went out briefly to run an errand. We thought because it was so sunny it wasn't that cold.

We were wrong. Wind chill, doncha know.

                      A new low! Lol.

                        @RealPlayer now that you mention it…. 🤣🤣🤣

I’ll have to check Mr SK’s hat to see if his ear flaps also have ear flaps… an important mission for the day! 😁

Yup, when you need to hear a little bit better, those little flaps are handy!
My challenge is face covering with glasses without fogging. I had cataract surgery on one eye years ago, so I can get by outside with glasses in my pocket. That's what I do when the wind is strong downtown and can cover everything except a narrow slit for my eyes. Fleece-lined pants and even adding long underwear as needed makes for walks that don't make us freeze. I've only worn my heavy coat once, I prefer to use a loose, light puffer as an outer cover with significant layers underneath.

My tuning layers prepare me for indoor temps anywhere between about 55 and 80+ degrees during a Chicago winter...

I took a cold shower when it was 43°. The cold is freezing my brain. I wish I had a winter coat. I'd be wearing it now.
