Are they just for a Christmas market? I thought they just closed Oxford street to vehicle traffic ("pedestrianisation") and those barriers are to keep any traffic out.

    https://www.theguardian.com/news/2026/oct/22/everyone-hates-oxford-street-will-pedestrianisation-save-it

I was going to post the Guardian article and see if @andyd had any opinions on the closure...

Police tape or sawhorses can keep traffic out. Jihaddist Peace Warriors need another level of physical protection

There are all kinds of bollards and other barriers that were installed as part of the project to make Oxford Street car-free.

        alt text

Lord Khan’s pedestrianisation of Oxford Street “discriminates” against wheelchair users and the visually impaired, disability campaigners have said.

The scheme was described as “shockingly bad” and discriminatory because it restricts access to the street.

Campaigners criticised inconveniently placed benches and bollards, and ramps that were “painful” to mount. They added that shops were also more difficult to access now that there was no direct public transport.

This isn't a "Christmas market" thing. The plan to close off Oxford Street has been in the works for a long time. They did rush to get it in before Christmas to maximize foot traffic to businesses during the holiday shopping season.

Whatever. My point isn’t about the timing it’s about why it’s necessary to physically protect pedestrian streets in Europe and it isn’t because the jehovas witnesses or the Hasidic Jews will indiscriminately kill scores of civilians while screaming an ecstatic religious battle cry.

I get that we’re supposed to pretend it isn’t an especial issue with one particular group but the data don’t support that and they tried to kill me and were almost successful so I refuse to go along.

@jon-nyc I'm not sure who "they" are or why they tried to kill you (not something you read on a forum every day), but it seems to me, in terms of world religions, comparative religion, it's just one organized religion among many. What if we attributed the violence Christians have done in history (nothing short of barbarism and savagery) with Christianity as a religion? Well, speaking for myself, I am a Christian, and I wouldn't let anyone put these deeds on me for one complete second.

I just did a bit of research and the 20 worst vehicle ramming attacks in Europe have killed 173 people.

Followers of Islam were responsible for 80% of them.

They are 5-6% of the European population.

Daniel - I was registered for and was supposed to be at the Risk Waters conference at Windows of the World on September 11th and 12th, 2001. I was going to be late which is why you and I had the chance to meet here.

                          Phobias are for spiders.

The term ‘Islamophobia’ is, at best, a category error. Islam is a set of ideas. A memetic complex. One can object, even strenuously, to ideas without being a bigot.

Ever notice that the terms ‘christianophobia’ or ‘judeophobia’ not only don’t exist, but they’re unintelligible

Christophobia doesn’t have a Wikipedia entry and my iPhone spell check flags it as not a word. I am not arguing that it’s never been written or uttered. But is isn’t in our collective consciousness.

Antisemitism is about Jews (a people), not Judaism (as a set of ideas). In fact antisemitism is more typically aimed at secular Jews rather than the religious set.

Yes. Whose prevalence in a certain group is multiple orders of magnitude higher than terrorist prevalence in other groups.

That is my point. And it’s not because they’re bad people. It’s because they inherited a set of horrible beliefs that deserve our criticism.

@jon-nyc Christophobia appears in all the major dictionaries. The fact that you are traversing semantic diversions to justify your blanket disdain of a large group of people raises question about your intentions with this thread. It sounds like bigotry.

                                        The industrial revolution cheapened everything.

Muslim extremists were responsible for 80% of them.

Muslims in (dare I say 'all'?) Islamic countries denounce extremism and terrorism in the name of Islam. This so from leaders to scholars.

Let's be clear what we're talking about. An extreme, fringe group of terrorists.

Yes. Whose prevalence in a certain group is multiple orders of magnitude higher than terrorist prevalence in other groups.

That is my point. And it’s not because they’re bad people. It’s because they inherited a set of horrible beliefs that deserve our criticism.

Your OP takes a swipe at the entirety of Islam. Terrorist extremists do not represent the teachings of Mohammed any more than today's christian evangelicals represent the teachings of Jesus Christ.

                                          The industrial revolution cheapened everything.
