Each person is different, we've known someone off work over a year with long covid, others barely a sniffle. I wasn't too bad, but coughed till I broke a rib.

@andyd - were those cases (yours and the person who got long covid) a while back? I thought that the current variants tend to be far less serious, more along the lines of the average case of the flu.

Sorry to hear about this. Hope Mr. SK has a mild case and gets better soon. Also hope you don't catch it. This reminds me that we have to get our Flu/Covid vacs! I am going tomorrow to do so.

I had my Covid and flu shot at the same time when I visited Duke early last month

Yes, nowadays people seem to have effective herd immunity. A work colleague of my sister had covid confirmed and we then wondered if the latest cold we've had was covid.

@shirokuro I'm sorry. I hope Mr. SK gets well soon. I hope you don't get sick.

@realplayer Efficacy of the vaccines has never been shown with data, actually. The head of Pfizer flat out admitted this in a speech to the EU a long time ago and nothing has changed.

People want to stone me in the public square when I say this but oh well.

This technology is radically different than what people think of as- "a vaccine".

Also, it can have debilitating, and even deady, side effects.

I choose not to get Covid "vaccinations".

I regret having ever done it, personally.

'But as they said in one of the later Rocky movies, "Time...it's undefeated.".-- Mik

@realplayer as @wtg already mentioned, the vaccines don’t offer protection from ever getting sick. While they do increase the chance of avoiding it completely, the important thing is that they offer protection from severe illness. So we’re happy with that, and very happy to have had our vaccines early enough that they should be in full effect. But not so far back that their efficacy is waning.

So Mr SK doesn’t seem to be getting worse. It’s like his symptoms got to the point where they are and now he’s just in a holding pattern. He’s on day four of active symptoms. My main concern at this point is that his cough not develop into something worse.

Well and the other concern is that neither of us have ever had Covid before. So although my understanding is that current variants are much less severe than earlier ones, it’s still uncharted territory for us.

Which brings me to @andyd ’s comment about herd immunity. My understanding of the term is that it means that there’s so much immunity that the disease no longer circulates. Like polio.

So there’s no herd immunity for Covid, the flu or the common cold. And it may be impossible for humans to achieve herd immunity for these viruses because they mutate so much.

I could be wrong about this, but that’s how I always thought herd immunity was defined.

I used one of the OTC test kits on myself this morning. Negative.

This is my day four or five, depending on how we interpret MR SK's condition, since exposure, so in a way it's a little bit too early to test for a symptom-less person, but I have to teach today. I'll wear a mask of course, but if the result had been positive, I would have moved my classes to Zoom.

I will test again of course.

I still haven't decided what to do about my conference trip. I feel really trapped between professional obligations and moral/health obligations....

And I feel like almost no one else in my position would choose to not go to the conference.

I also feel like, if I don't go, I will stay negative and Mr SK will be fine, and I'll regret not going. But if I do go, I'll get sick and Mr SK will be worse and then I'll blame myself for having made the decision to go. 😅

SK, thanks for clarifying that bit about the vaccine only warding off serious illness. I’d heard that before, but had forgotten about it.

Hope Mr. SK is out of the woods soon, and you stay healthy.
