If he's not feeling terrible now he's not likely to. I've had it four times now, once from a funeral and three times flying, and only spent one day in bed. I believe the vaccines do what they are supposed to.

    this is encouraging, thank you!!

I am also hoping not to get it...
I talked to my colleague and he's ok with me joining him in the car to our conference (presuming I'm not actually sick).

    We'll see how it goes.

You say Mr. SK got the vaccine and still got Covid? That’s not how it’s supposed to work.

        @realplayer

Actually, that is how it works.

        From Mayo Clinic:

Getting a COVID-19 vaccine helps to keep you healthy. The vaccine protects against serious illness, the need for hospital care due to COVID-19 and death from COVID-19.

        https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/coronavirus/in-depth/coronavirus-vaccine/art-20484859

It may help some people to not get sick at all, but as importantly, it reduces the severity if you do get it. As @mik said, no worse than a day or two of feeling poorly, rather than getting severely ill and needing to be hospitalized. Especially important as we get older, as our immune systems are not as robust and we can't fight off various bugs as well as we did when we were younger.

Each person is different, we've known someone off work over a year with long covid, others barely a sniffle. I wasn't too bad, but coughed till I broke a rib.

@andyd - were those cases (yours and the person who got long covid) a while back? I thought that the current variants tend to be far less serious, more along the lines of the average case of the flu.

Sorry to hear about this. Hope Mr. SK has a mild case and gets better soon. Also hope you don't catch it. This reminds me that we have to get our Flu/Covid vacs! I am going tomorrow to do so.

I had my Covid and flu shot at the same time when I visited Duke early last month

Yes, nowadays people seem to have effective herd immunity. A work colleague of my sister had covid confirmed and we then wondered if the latest cold we've had was covid.

@shirokuro I'm sorry. I hope Mr. SK gets well soon. I hope you don't get sick.

@realplayer Efficacy of the vaccines has never been shown with data, actually. The head of Pfizer flat out admitted this in a speech to the EU a long time ago and nothing has changed.

People want to stone me in the public square when I say this but oh well.

This technology is radically different than what people think of as- "a vaccine".

Also, it can have debilitating, and even deady, side effects.

I choose not to get Covid "vaccinations".

I regret having ever done it, personally.

'But as they said in one of the later Rocky movies, "Time...it's undefeated.".-- Mik

@realplayer as @wtg already mentioned, the vaccines don’t offer protection from ever getting sick. While they do increase the chance of avoiding it completely, the important thing is that they offer protection from severe illness. So we’re happy with that, and very happy to have had our vaccines early enough that they should be in full effect. But not so far back that their efficacy is waning.

So Mr SK doesn’t seem to be getting worse. It’s like his symptoms got to the point where they are and now he’s just in a holding pattern. He’s on day four of active symptoms. My main concern at this point is that his cough not develop into something worse.

Well and the other concern is that neither of us have ever had Covid before. So although my understanding is that current variants are much less severe than earlier ones, it’s still uncharted territory for us.

Which brings me to @andyd ’s comment about herd immunity. My understanding of the term is that it means that there’s so much immunity that the disease no longer circulates. Like polio.

So there’s no herd immunity for Covid, the flu or the common cold. And it may be impossible for humans to achieve herd immunity for these viruses because they mutate so much.

I could be wrong about this, but that’s how I always thought herd immunity was defined.
