I've had good luck buying refurbished - always staying a couple of years behind.

@Rontuner Where do you get your refurbished phones?

For a while I was able to get them at local GameStop stores - but more recently used back market - I usually look for reviews like this:

      https://www.igeeksblog.com/best-places-to-buy-refurbished-used-iphones/

Since MrsTuner bought her last phone new from the Apple Store, my latest one was a hand-me-down from her instead of getting the trade-in from Apple. We traded in my old 8 and now use her 13.

I'm not opposed to this idea, although I would worry about the battery life. Where do you buy refurbished phones from? (I wonder if we have less options locally...)

I read that as black market and was a little bit "clutching my pearls" shocked! 😄

My old 6 plus is still in action as a dedicated "tuning phone" for my piano tuning app (don't recall where I got that one) - I did purchase a battery case which gives me plenty of juice. Since it lives in my tuning case, I don't have to fit it in a pocket.

My 13 now shows a maximum 80% capacity - but since I'm plugged in between appointments for mapping that hasn't been a problem. We do have a couple of mag-safe external batteries that can be used while travelling to extend the charge for long days?

The refurbished ones are available at many levels - almost new - to rough but functional. Prices reflect that. I got a rough one for tuning... I was going for cheap options with a bigger screen!

I looked on backmarket and they have two tiers of battery level - 80-89% capacity and 90-99% with prices to reflect. I guess it would depend which phones you are moving from to know how much newer would make a difference? Apple Store doesn't go any older than the 15 for their refurbished models.

As to whether it is smart to replace the battery, again that depends on use and if the current phone is near the end of being able to load the newest iOS?

One of my concerns with our current phones, and with replacing the batteries (which, granted, we can carry battery packs) is that we (me and MR SK) both travel, and he will be in Japan in the fall for awhile (and presumably, I'll be there for a big chunk next summer). Being overseas and having a major problem with the phone would be a huge hassle.

So I tend to think I'd prefer to get a new phone (or at least a refurbished one) rather than pay for a new battery for these phones...

I dunno, I need to think about it more, but I think I want to decide what to do, and then do it, before the fall semester starts and I get busy again....

One thing that you may have to decide with refurbished is whether to buy with all original brand replacements or cheaper third party.
I decided third party rather than all Samsung refurbished parts.
You don't know what has been changed anyway. Screen, camera glass, & battery are most likely?

(It a bit like buying a used car. I've never checked to see if the tyres are the same brand as the car originally came with from the factory. Anyway I always buy cheaper mid-range tyres, usually made in Turkey)

I bought a used iPhone 14 Pro last year? year before? because it was the last model before ai was being crammed down our throats, and it has 3 camera lenses for 3x optical zoom. It’s heavy. But I like it. Battery life was at 89% when I bought it, but it hasn’t been terrible. I bought it on Amazon.

I've done refurbished iPads from Apple and they were great. Maybe not as big a savings as buying from another service selling used, but it's like getting a new device.

High-quality materials and components in a refurbished iPhone reduce its impact on the environment. All refurbished iPhone models come with a new battery, a new outer shell, a one-year limited warranty, and free delivery and returns.

                          This also includes:

Full functional testing, genuine Apple part replacements (if needed), and a thorough cleaning
The original operating system or a more recent version footnote *
All accessories and cables repackaged in a brand‑new box

                          • If your device is shipped with the original Operating System, the most recent version can be downloaded for free from the App Store.

It’s shocking how many people (and seemingly those who can least afford it) already behave this way. I’ve heard many people talk about how with their plan plan they “get to upgrade in one more year” or whatever. The implication being as soon as they’ve paid off one phone they “get to” buy another one.

Having said that the component cost increase is quite real. Strange though because we generally expect consumer electronics to be relentlessly driven down in cost over time.

I buy my phones outright from the Apple Store. Hopefully memory gets cheaper by the time I need to replace Mayla’s, she’s a bit of an instagram queen and needs the max memory on hers.
