That is quite exciting. Like all miraculous medical advances, at my age I wish they'd hurry the hell up.

I'm probably going to have injection treatment for at least one knee. They've both been painful for many years and the left one is especially bad.

It's the fact there's something wrong with my hip that worries me most. My right side starting chronically hurting about two years ago.

There's no question in my mind now that something's wrong. I won't know more until imaging but my skeleton is not in alignment.

I'd definitely rather attack these issues with intensive physical therapy.

It's not news this kind of medical process takes time.

I brought up my knee pain with my PCP and he declined to give me a referral for even an X-ray.

He was acting on automatic pilot. That was clear.

I could have and could force the issue. But, then, I haven't presented the hip issue. His response in denying me a knee X-ray was absurd, and I have to choose my battles.

Frankly, I'm keeping part of my inheritance after buying a home and car and putting part of it in my Trust.

I'm going to ask my trustee, SIL, friend to use her Power of Attorney to pay to have the hip situation evaluated and to make it possible to start physical therapy.

I don't mean to sound like a brat but I don't have time to waste on this one.

@Daniel physical therapy, with a good PTist, can be truly amazing. I highly recommend it.

If your PCP doesnt give you a referral, you contact your insurance to see if you can self-refer to PT, some plans allow that, esp. for knees, which is such a common problem.

              Good luck!

I have synthetic cartilage in my big toe joint. Maybe that will become suitable for knees and hips.

As someone who is involved in several of them, let me remind you that online support groups have a built in sample bias. Most people find them because they’re having issues. That can make it seem like everyone has horrible issues with the surgery, when in reality most people who don’t have issues never find or post much in the group.

I’m regularly reminding people of that in lung transplant groups - after they say ‘look at all the problems everyone has, why should I even get this surgery?’ And I then say ‘I could post every time I set a new PR at the gym or on my bike but that’s not really what the group is about’.

I know, and I totally get that.

But I do feel like there's a lot the doctors don't focus on, and it's frustrating to feel like you can only find about some of those things from random strangers online.

For example, the stuff I mentioned above about "prehab" (exercises, strength training I could/should be doing in advance of the surgery). And all the logistics. I received a big packet of info, and no where does it talk about renting a wheelchair or knee scooter, that kind of thing.

The doctors are only thinking about the spot they are going to operate on, but that spot is connected to the rest of me....

I love being older. I definitely wouldn't go back in time and have to do everything I had to do to get here again. I also have no desire to live forever.

I don't even mind aging. I'm trying to be immodest but I've aged well especially given everything I've put my body through including both trauma and neglect. I look ten years younger than I am and have my whole adult life. It's just a fact. I have an intuitive real time knowledge of how women and men react to me. It's a survival mechanism I learned a long time ago.

The stress of the last eight years hasn't done me any favors but that's about to end.

But I hate the physical problems, and I hate dealing with the medical system!

I had the best PCP in Hawaii for seven years; she was a board certified internist, and we developed an affinity for one another, even though that's not something that's "supposed" to happen.

Since then, I've met only Doctors, including specialists, who are "phoning it in."

I need to take more control over my health. I'm hoping I'll have a better opportunity to do that after I move.

'But as they said in one of the later Rocky movies, "Time...it's undefeated.".-- Mik
