Everything she says applies to the US as well.

Eric Schmidt, former head of Google, has said, “We don’t need you to type at all. We know where you are. We know where you’ve been. We can more or less know what you’re thinking about.”

I can't help but think of William Saffire's rants and raves over the protection of our privacy. He must be turning in his grave.

In the scheme of global harms committed by the tech bros – the undermining of democracies, the decimation of privacy, the open gauntlet to scams and abuse – stealing one Australian author’s life’s work and ruining their livelihood is a peccadillo.

How does it ruin an author’s livelihood? It’s not like AI will read to the book to me if I ask it. If I want to buy a book, I’ll buy a book. That AI read it already doesn’t, and can’t, figure into that decision.

            What am I missing?

AI never asked for permission to use the creator's work in the manner in which it is being used, and the author is not being credited for the work they did, the latter being more relevant to livelihood. Attributions lead readers to the source, the source gains every time a reader, based on the quotes they've read, decide to buy the work(s).
