This is the AirBnB house in Huron.

    https://share.icloud.com/photos/044Hwutdin9YKi96xoAok_j9Q

I’m not sure why the deck was built on an angle as it’s open plank decking and doesn’t need slope for drainage. I’m even less sure of why they tapered the height of the railing to make it look even more slanted. They went to a lot of trouble to build it that way but the result looks like a sinking ship. 😳

I’ve been replacing rotted pieces a few at a time but the rot is moving more quickly than I do. There is a set of switchback steps on the side that will need complete replacement soon. Now there is a roof leak under it that will require partial demolition to find and may not be repairable because they screwed up the way it’s fastened to the house. There is sure to be more rot at that connection.

It makes no sense to put that much effort in to fixing something that looks so bad so I’ve hired a company to remove it. Should be quite a transformation and I’m sure the neighbors will be very interested - probably pro and con. I’m not real popular over there anyway because it’s an Airbnb. Should be fun.

So what are your thoughts? Why was it built that way? Is it an improvement or an eyesore? Do you think I’ll want to put it back?

And while we’re here, what are your thoughts on the color scheme? I like it - blends in with the site. Sharon does not - thinks it’s boring. The taxes just jumped $900 per month 😱 and there is a good chance we’ll be selling it in the Spring.

@Steve-Miller oof, I'm sorry to hear about all the issues, esp the roof leak! And I agree, that slant looks terrible the way it is!

IOW, so you mean that at this point, you don't have plans to replace it with a different deck, right?

I would guess that having a deck would be an additional selling point but as to whether you'd recoup it in a sale, that's a tricky questions.

Yeah, I cannot imagine why they did that.

And here is why the roof leaked. Rather than install a proper support they just lag bolted a 2x6 through the shingles.

                      Idiots! 😡

Having now seen the photo of what was underneath, I will add that it was a, shall we say, creative approach.....🤦

If you look at the picture of the side of the house you can see they bolted the ledger boards through the siding and in to the plywood sheathing. Not the framing, the sheathing. 😳

No need to take the bolts out, the boards just pulled off with a little tug. I’m amazed the whole thing didn’t fall down.

                              Hope everything went well yesterday!

Everything went fine yesterday. Forecast is for 2 days of rain so it may not be finished this week, but at least it won’t be leaking.

What are you going to do with the sliding door? Are you going to put a deck back up? I like the color scheme.

                                      @Jodi

The repurposed wood pieces I panted are to build a railing to create a “Juliette balcony” at the front of the little porch in front of the sliding door. It’s the only place in the house where you can see the lake.

                                      Deck will not be reinstalled.
