@andyd This reminds me. "Gifting" is actually a word that is one of my pet peeves.

Yes, a lot of people like this word, and so many people use it that it's English today.

Yes, most of us here use it.

    I know.

But I'm not sure how long it will last, or in other words, I don't think it will last. I give it 10 years.

    But who knows.

    Anyway...

    You give a gift.

So what this word means after you take it apart and put it together again is:

    You gift a gift.

On a different note, one of my best critics said of my English the following:

"Educated speech has an unusual robotic quality."

I concluded that this person had a limited intelligence, poor social awareness, and a lack of social experience.

I guess I had the option of thinking "FU" but it was such a unique and amusing comment.

'But as they said in one of the later Rocky movies, "Time...it's undefeated.".-- Mik

Gifting could be replaced with presenting.
        So you'd present a present.

I have always hated “gifted” ever since I first heard it verbed. Like when someone uses it in the “she gifted me this book” sense.

For some reason it sounds less personal to me, like the receiver doesn’t actually have a relationship with the gift giver.

Separate from that I generally like verbing.

It all depends on the noun that gets verbed.

          😅

And then, of course, there’s REgifting.

So, that word does not bug me.... well, as long as it's used as a gerund 😄

If someone says "Remember that book that Mark gifted me? I regifted it to Sue" then all bets are off.

How do we feel about "opening up?

                Celebrity X is "opening up"...

                Myself-

                I think it's worn.

TBH, I think it'll only fair to balance "open up" with"shut up". 🤷

How about "solvable" instead of "soluble"?
                  Solvability instead of solubility?
Or "solve" as a noun (in place of "solution")?

Americans usually say "solvable" in the context of discussing a problem. The Indians say "soluble" instead (at least that's what I noticed from watching Indian-produced math-centric YouTube videos).

How do we feel about "self-care"?

I think it should be (and will be) expunged from English.

A thought experiment- why isn't there the term "other-care"?

No. There's direct care. Direct care is difficult, logistically complicated, often laborious work.

I know. It was my mother's NYS job for 20 years to take care of full grown, actually old, TBH, adults, with the minds of developmentally disabled children.

Self-care. I think it should (and will).go back to taking care of oneself.

i dislike this expression as well.... I think the concept is ok, but the way it's used is grating... And I read a critique a while pointing out that often, what's recommended as self-care is often not that great for the person...

I think of it as a frivolous idea, even though AI says there are "5 Pillars'' involved so clearly there are people who take it seriously (I stopped reading after "5 pillars").

I'm fine with self care. Self care means preparing comfort food when you need it. It means saying "no" when necessary Distancing oneself from toxic people. Taking a break from the news when it gets too overwhelming. Shutting off devices. Pampering oneself. Resting when necessary. And on and on and on.

That's how I define it anyway.
