I was one of those people. The best was when you got upgraded. First class on domestic flights had three rows and the back one was smoking.

I had never been on a plane until sometime in college, and I'm pretty sure it was after the smoking ban was in place.
I do remember as a child joining my brothers in hounding my parents, who both smoked. We hated it! And they both eventually quit, my mother said our continual complaining was part of the motivation.

I remember workplaces filled with sickening secondhand smoke, and not a thing you could do about it.

Btw when I first went to Japan, the smoking regulations were quite loose. No smoking in school classrooms, thankfully, but most other workplaces were unrestricted. At my first workplace (a junior high), they had decided not to allow smoking in the teachers room because there had been a pregnant teacher, and then after she had her baby, they just kept the policy in place. But for my second job, I was a traveling teacher based out of the board of education, which was inside city hall. The city hall policy was that you could smoke in designated areas during the breaks, so before 8am, from 10-10:15am, during lunch, from 3-3:15pm and then after 5pm. The designated area was right by my desk
Fortunately, I was rarely there because I was usually at some school somewhere. After my second or third year in that job, the national law changed and then smoking wasn’t allowed anywhere in city hall — yay!!

I was one of those people too.
I smoked on my London trip as a 14 yr old.
Nobody cared.
Except my uncle/ MS history teacher in charge of our group
when he busted me.It was a 747 and smoking was allowed in the upstairs lounge.
I smoked on planes all the time.
Looking back it should have been illegal.

I remember those cheap pedestal ashtrays at our doctors office!
I also remember seeing audience members smoking on the Phil Donahue show in the 70s. This may have been before he went national (he started in Dayton and we lived in Ohio).
Sometimes a burst of exhaled smoke would go right in the way of the camera and they’d switch to another camera angle.

I was not particularly anti-smoking back in the 60-70s. That’s just the way it was - all the cool people smoked and I didn’t. This was not the first example of me not being cool. I was exposed to a lot of secondhand smoke in college but I don’t think much of it was tobacco.
Then there was my first assignment at my first full-time job as an auditor with a public accounting firm in 1974. At a client, I was stuck in a small cramped office with two chain smokers all day for several weeks. Maybe three packs a day each?
I came home every day feeling sick and I wasn’t even sure why at first. by the time the assignment was over I was ready to burn all the clothes I had worn into that office. I was not a professional medical researcher, but I started to develop a theory that smoking wasn’t good for me.
