I'll be waiting to see ... how it accommodates the existing carpet.
Me too!!
The carpet is a bit of a gamble. I can't remember if I posted about this already, but basically, the carpenter originally said he would pull back the carpet and then we could have a carpet layer come in and replace it (i.e. use the same carpet).
Well I spoke with a few carpet stores and they said "nope, not gonna work, we won't do that." Basically because stairwells use too many staples, they said that the carpet wouldn't really be in good shape to go back, no matter how carefully you pulled back the carpet or removed the staples.
So he's going to try to put holes in the carpet and put the balusters in that way. I figure it's worth a try, since if it works, great, but if it doesn't work, I'd have to replace the carpet completely, which is what we would have to do if he didn't try it.
We'll know in a few days here!

That's looking very good. How did he fit the posts in the carpet so neatly?
Big Al
No idea!

That looks great! Is there handrail on the wall above where the stair railing begins? (Handrail on both sides?)
There will be. He started from the bottom, so he’s not to that point yet. I suspect he’s saved the easiest part for last.

Thanks everyone! Yep, it couldn’t have worked out better! And I’m so glad we didn’t do an actual wall there instead, esp. given how nice the room is down there.
And I am glad we got it installed now, before we moved. It’s definitely safer, and it’s one of those things that if you didn’t do right away, it would just stay that way forever. Until someone fell off the stairs
