@jon-nyc Christophobia appears in all the major dictionaries. The fact that you are traversing semantic diversions to justify your blanket disdain of a large group of people raises question about your intentions with this thread. It sounds like bigotry.

You’re missing the key point. My beef isn’t with a people, it’s with a set of ideas.

@jon-nyc Well there is nothing worse in Islam (the religion of peace as you say) than in Christianity and especially Judaism. The old testament is full of violence and an angry, malevolent god. At least Christianity starts with the "new" or 11th commandment.

The bottom line is they are all Abrahamic religions. People bring themselves to religion. Those that want to find peace and inspiration for a better life in their religious books will find it. Those that want to find justification for hatred and war will find it. No set of religious ideas is exempt from this.

On the subject, Lewis Black's take on the old and new testaments are well worth a listen...

Bernard, remember who you’re speaking to. I have a pretty solid track record criticizing Christianity and Judaism. I can’t really be whattabouted in this.

But the numbers are what they are. If we had to protect public spaces from mostly Christian fundamentalists instead of Muslim jihaddists I would be straightforwardly and openly critical about it.

And I suspect I’d find more people here in agreement with me as I did.

@jon-nyc OK. So you finally wrote, "Mulsim jihaddists". That's a whole tone different than your OP where you took swipe at all Muslims.

I said Muslim (adjective) jihadists (noun). The latter being a descriptive term for the subset of Muslims who carry these beliefs. And yes I know that some people define ‘jihhad’ differently. But I assume in context you knew I wasn’t describing people who are merely dealing with an internal struggle with their faith. That group won’t be indiscriminately killing civilians while in religious ecstasy.

@jon-nyc I totally understood that, jon. And I'm saying that that conveys a very different tone (as in better) than your OP, where you wrote, "keep the Christmas market safe from the Religion of Peace™".

Are they just for a Christmas market? I thought they just closed Oxford street to vehicle traffic ("pedestrianisation") and those barriers are to keep any traffic out.

I was going to post the Guardian article and see if @andyd had any opinions on the closure...

We were on Oxford Street two days after this started (Thursday 29th).
We were outside New Bond Street tube, as I wanted some joya shoes, then we headed south to Picadilly.

We laughed because the small barriers looked half-cocked to us; but they were for pedestrians and no doubt the street will eventually be levelled with the pavement, and filled with seats, shrubs & trees.

It badly needed doing, the footpaths by themselves are wholly inadequate for the flood of pedestrians you have to 'swim' through.
You used to feel the nearness of large busses and speedy taxis.
Immediately safer and less chance for pickpockets.

Even the initial blocking of traffic lengthways works wonders.
Traffic still crosses over Oxford Street in 6 places.
                      But a definite 👍

That's what they did in the town where @kluurs lives; I grew up in a nearby town. Of course that happened back in the Stone Age when I was but a teenager. They closed off the street and re-landscaped to include trees, benches, etc., in an effort to make it welcoming. And to create barriers so people who had been accustomed to turning onto Lake Street from Harlem Avenue (super busy intersection) didn't do that once vehicle traffic was prohibited.

Some years later, they took it all out and opened it back up to traffic.

Gods, religion and mysticism need to leave our collective consciousness.

                          It can't happen soon enough.

It will be interesting to see how the Oxford Street initiative works out. Any number of cities, including Chicago, have tried various flavors of shutting down a major thoroughfare to vehicle traffic. They've met with varying degrees of success.
