Good reason not to have wifi on your refrigerator

A new kind of cyberattack.
Dozens of supermarkets across seven European countries have been hit by a cyber-attack affecting their refrigerators and freezers.
Around 40 Delhaize supermarkets in Belgium and Luxembourg were affected, while a smaller number of shops were hit in Sweden, Ireland, the Netherlands, Estonia and Finland.
Sabcobel, a Belgian company that manufactures some of the affected refrigerators, said the units' evaporators were switched to defrost mode, causing them to warm up, in what is believed to be the same method used in last month's incident that hit hundreds of French supermarkets.
Millions of euros worth of food had to be thrown away in October, local media reported at the time.
Stephan Moelans, the CEO of Sabcobel, which operates Delhaize's systems, on Monday told the Belga news agency that the incident was a cyber-attack and that the company had been "working all night and morning to disconnect the affected units from the network".

These are commercial units, but no reason that I know of the same thing couldn't happen to residential units. Imagine every LG frig going south, all on one day?

I found out my dead Amana washer has about 15 electronic parts that can fail AND all of its electronic parts are proprietary. It's a $650 retail machine with a market price of $450. It would cost $200- $300 to fix it.
I will have it removed from my house, from where it sits, taken to an appliance graveyard. Nevermind the exigencies nvolved. I don't care.
And one with WiFi? When hell freezes over.

French blood banks were on Monday affected by the recent wave of cybersecurity attacks on European refrigeration systems, the French Blood Establishment confirmed on Wednesday.
The organization said that while it wasn’t the direct target of the attack, cold storage units operated by external providers containing the EFS’ blood products were compromised across three of its sites, with hackers cranking up temperatures.
“Specifically, temperature and defrost thresholds were set to excessively high levels,” the EFS said in a statement translated from French to English by CNBC.
“These cold storage units—located at EFS preparation and distribution sites—are used to store blood products prior to their delivery to healthcare facilities, as well as samples intended for EFS biobanks.”

Technology has become much too complicated as well as intrusive.
All of this is much more of an energy sink than a convience.
It also (electronics in appliances and devices, and cars, unfortunately) has a clear (and severe) tie in with planned obsolescence.
I started using Android for the simplicity of it, the easy to understand and use software interface.
Motorola has added so much bloatware to my phone since I bought it that it's not the same phone now. It also changes the user interface in numerous and random ways every matter of days (not weeks).
Its battery is starting to drain progressively faster for the maker's purpose that a phone with a sealed battery (or every phone) is on a downward glide path to becoming inoperable (when otherwise it would last for many years).
This is one time I won't mind it. I hate this phone with a passion.
