    @Rontuner Yep, those are positives if you’re a Republican.

      Ouch.

      (I cut the date off in the screen shot it was from the morning after the primary victory)

        Planter’s reaction was so weird “this is categorically false but I’m pausing my campaign to reflect”.

        WTF?

          I disagree. The woman was not young enough to make him a good candidate for president. Maybe a senator.

            @jon-nyc His elaborated response...

            “We are taking the time to reflect on the best path forward for the state that I love, the people that I love, the movement I belong to and the goal of defeating Susan Collins,” Platner said.

            “You never turned your back on me, and I will not turn my back on you now,” he said. “Every one of you deserves to see that vision come to fruition, and see Susan Collins defeated, and we will use every tool at our disposal to do so. As Maine goes, so goes the nation.”

            If the party has to appoint a successor, Maine is going to have another Kamala situation--where they'll be forced to vote for someone they didn't choose. I don't think that's going to go over well. More friction in the party, If Platner isn't steely enough to continue they'd be best to pick someone as close to his vision and philosophy as possible. But I think Maine is now lost to Collins.

            There is something absolutely rotten, if not fishy, about the timing of this this news. It took less than three hours for Gilibrand (again!) and Schumer called for his ouster. Why now, less than a week away from a deadline? She was interviewed by the NYTimes earlier this year. Nothing.

            Collins can go fuck herself, hypocritical bitch. She voted for Kavanaugh.

            Collins herself weighed in on social media: “These allegations are appalling. Nevertheless, it is not up to me to choose the Democratic nominee for Senate.”

                  No. I didn't see the full picture. I will delete my post.

                    @Bernard

                    My understanding is the Maine Democratic Party organization has ruled out picking a candidate themselves and is investigating ways to do some sort of quick plebecite or something.

                    Late last night I heard Platner was trying to negotiate his exit by choosing the candidate to replace him.

                    By the way Platner didn’t seem to be on track to win. After the second to last scandal (not this rape but the earlier stuff) his polling advantage went to 2 points or something and Collins has a history of beating her polling numbers. In 2020 she was down by about 6 points going into the election and won by 9. A huge gap.

                      Re the Times, according to the woman she didn’t describe the full elospde to the Times in the spring. Just said he was ‘reckless’ and ‘disturbing’.

                      Politico has seen contemporary emails between her and her therapist.

                      Platner was probably told that when he got the call from them to react to the story which is probably why he knew he was fucked and started canceling campaign events to ‘reflect’.

                        @jon-nyc I think it would be best if Platner can (legally) pick his successor. But I thought Maine law was pretty clear on what has to happen. Hope they can make it work.

                        As far as polling goes, Platner was doing as well as anyone could be.

                          Maine law said the party can replace him. The party can choose how to do that. I like the fact that they don’t want the 100 or so delegates to choose but want to open it up. Platner’s option is more or less identical to the Kamala situation you were saying you wanted to avoid a few posts back (candidate elected in non-competitive primary picks his successor instead of letting the voters decide in some abbreviated process)

                            Bernie:

                            Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vermont), a key backer of Graham Platner’s insurgent Senate campaign in Maine, said Tuesday that Platner should step aside following an accusation of sexual assault.
                            “I have spoken with Graham Platner about the best path forward for Maine,” Sanders said in a statement. “In light of these very serious allegations, I have recommended that he step aside.”

                            Liz:

                            “With so much at stake, the best path forward is for Graham Platner to step aside as the Democratic nominee and address these serious allegations outside this Senate race,” said Senator Elizabeth Warren, who had campaigned with Mr. Platner and championed his bid.
