Those of us who love music and are sensitive to sound might sometimes be sensitive to noise and want to block it out. This makes sense to me anyway and is true in my case.

I bought a few different kinds of ear plugs and through trial and error found ones that work for me and that I'd like to recommend.

Temu | Explore the Latest Clothing, Beauty, Home, Jewelry & More https://share.google/DLXM7f13BdSS8KCMw

I don't shop at Temu. I think their aggressive spinning wheel/ win a free $100 shopping spree pop ups are annoying. YMMV.

But this is the brand and the product. The jar of foam pieces were too big for my ears and had to be thrown away. It's the rubber ones in their own little plastic that I recommend. I don't know if there's a way to buy this type of ear plugs without having to pay for the "one size fits most" jar of foam pieces but my guess would be yes.

As you can see, these are soft plastic. They have a "handle" on each one, so you can only wear one in your ear that's not on a pillow if you're sleeping on your side or you can wear both at any time.

They are easy to adjust to fit, easy to remove, work to knock the sound level down 30+ decibels iirc, and are washable and can be used almost forever as far as I can tell.

It's take me at least six months to find these and I like having them. I keep them in their little plastic box.

They come in handy when you don't want to hear urban noise, or hypothetically, it you have a lout of a roommate who does street drugs, invites overnight guests for sleep overs, and doesn't sleep. Just sayin.

5 stars even if you have to pay a premium for a jar of disposable foam ear plugs that might or not work for you.

I like it when inexpensive items end up being this useful.

The brand is LYSIAN. You can buy them anywhere.

Many piano techs regularly use ear protection so "what's the best" question comes up pretty often. I've always said that "the ones you will wear" is the best option. Meaning easy and comfortable while getting the job done. Congrats on finding something that works for you!

I didn’t opt to sit through the spinning wheel and go through the Temu app. But I do use earplugs and specifically musician’s earplugs, because my piano is too loud, but I still need to hear frequencies that ordinary foam plugs obliterate.

The brand I use is Eargasm (haha, right?) bought on Amazon. They do the job but I haven’t compared them with other brands.

The better solution is new hammers or a smaller piano. I am leaning toward the latter.

Haven't used earplugs since I left NYC.

New Hampshire looks beautiful. I haven't been there.

The summer I lived in NY I remember thinking the noise was unreal. I lived in a double loft room hole in the wall with my best friend from college. There were I don't know how many such rooms with the central space once being a society matron's ballroom. Bands played there in the weekend. Can you imagine how loud that place was?

It had one makeshift bathroom and a small kitchen full of dirty dishes.

This was in the East Village on Ave B before it became as I'm sure it has by now become more gentrified.

There was a man sitting in front of the building every day selling Persian rugs and a huge garage like door across the street with a large satanic symbol spray painted on it. It was all a little too much for me.

Finally one night I escaped to a hotel for the night and then took the train to Poughkeepsie to visit my family before moving back to Florida.

Alphabet City. I lived on 3rd between B and C for about a year. Rough place back then. We were broken into... not that it mattered all that much because we had slim pickings in those days. A small black-and-white tv was all they could take. It was unnerving, though, because I was asleep in the apartment during the break-in. Around 10:30 am (I worked into the late evenings) someone opened the door to my bedroom and closed it. I thought it was strange that my roommate would do that, but also he was usually gone to NYU by then. So when I got out of bed I phoned him and he said he was not in the apartment at that time. When I went out to the living room, I saw the window wide open, the tv gone, and the front door wide open.

                The industrial revolution cheapened everything.

I like the Loop earplugs; I use the Experience 2 for concerts/live music. They also have some for sleeping. They stay in, and if you get a magnetic lanyard (theirs or aftermarket), they also stay around your neck when you want to take them out for a while.

I used to use Etymotics, but I lost those in Nashville and had to change to something less easy to lose!
