We had the living room repainted. It was gray for 20-some years, now it’s blue. The ceiling was the worst. It had cracks and seams and stains, and a very uneven surface by the fireplace. The adjacent walls also had cracks. But the new color works great!

The next question is what to do about the bay window and curtains. It’s weird that the moldings are next to the ceiling. Our handyman doesn’t trust mounting rods on the ceiling because he can’t tell where the supports are. So we are researching all of this on the weekend.

    Pics to follow.

I bet it looks wonderful! Remind me of how long you’ve lived there?

I saw some photos in an article where the person was arguing that everyone should mount their curtain rods on the ceiling (I guess to make the room look bigger?) I didn’t like how it looked but I imagine some people would like it that way.

I hope you find a solution that works for you!

@Daniel It’s a question of posting the photos. I’m trying to use the procedure given in the Pinned Topic but it’s not working this time. I’ll try again.

@RealPlayer maybe the photos are too large?

@realplayer I have instructions bookmarked but other things have kept me busy. I definitely want to learn how to do it.

So, I figured out how to add the 2 photos! A rather convoluted process, but it worked. See two above photos.

The walls were originally gray, so we decided that was now old-fashioned and we picked this blue. The ceiling had to be repaired (sagging and cracks in places, especially around the fireplace. Our guy did a good job on that.

We still need to figure out curtains/drapes. The problem with the bay window is that the window moldings are right up against the ceiling. May have to suspend the curtain rod from the ceiling. Or enclose the entire bay with a straight curtain behind the couch. But curtains at the windows would be far more elegant, no?

                    Your ideas are welcome.

                      Gorgeous! 🥰

Do I have this right? You own an entire house? What kind architecture is it? Is a brownstone or more like a bungalow?

                        @RealPlayer that looks lovely!

Regarding the bay window, that is tricky isn’t it! Before the new paint, did you just not have curtains there?

Could you take a close up of the window frame?

What is your goal? Is it just to be able to have some privacy here (and/or light blocking)? I wonder if you could add blinds that fit inside the window frame. We have them like that, I can take a photo later.

We actually have three bay windows (in different rooms). For two of them we have curtains (but we don’t have the problem you have so the rods are just attached to the wall above the frame) and for the other, we don’t have curtains, only blinds, and they are the kind that fit inside the window frame.

                          What a beautiful room! 👍

Have you considered Roman shades for the bay window? I think they’d look great with your furniture.

I see you can buy them motorized now. Might be handy if you’d like to use them for insulation.

@Steve-Miller those look fantastic! And much better than what we have in our house! 😅

My only concern about those kind of blinds would be the price.

We were able to get off-the-shelf blinds so we didn’t have to pay for custom fit. But they’re not beautiful! 😅

@realplayer I love that soft blue; it’s very elegant.

I wouldn’t put up curtains that block the whole bay window; the geometry of the bay window adds so much to the look of the room. Top down bottom up blinds that fit inside the window frame? They can be room darkening/insulating, or not. Mine are sheer. I love light!

Thanks for your comments! By the way, the object partly seen on the left is the grand piano, still covered with moving blankets.

The window recesses may be too shallow to accept Roman blinds. I will try to post a pic.

Formerly we had light curtains suspended from cheap lightweight rods mounted on the side moldings. Never looked good, and the curtains themselves are torn and ratty.
