Olympics

When I was growing up, watching both the Winter and Summer Olympic Games was something I really looked forward to. They were usually covered by ABC with Jim McKay and the Wild World of Sports team. Used to love hearing Dick Button's commentary on figure skating.
Have to admit I pretty much stopped watching, probably in the 1990s. Not sure whether it was that they just seemed too commercialized and that there were so many sports to watch, or if life just took me in other directions. I do plan to watch the opening ceremonies later today.
Anybody going to be watching? Do you have particular sports that you'll be following?

I used to love the Olympics too, and we followed the events and athletes closely when I lived in Japan. But now I can hardly keep track of it all, probably due to a combination of factors. But it makes me kind of sad somehow.
I imagine I’ll catch snippets here and there of the events…

The human race has discovered many things more interesting than the Olympics. Progress!
I am of the opinion that most sports meets are unnecessary. Unless it's a sports that require athletes to compete interactively with each other in realtime (e.g., wrestling), individual athletes can just do their things independently and have their performances recorded separately than compared later (e.g., virtually all track and field, swimming, gymnastics) -- there is no real need to get the athletes together physically; it's just a big waste of time and resources, bad for the environment.

It was quite spectacular. Several pianos, some Steinways, were out in the pouring rain. I thought the bridge runway was particularly good design.
