Currently -17°C (2°F). With windchill -23°C (-2°F). It’s supposed to drop a few more degrees over night.

All taps, just a drip is usually enough. Pay attention to which fixtures are on outside walls.

Meanwhile, a little generator might be a good investment. Nothing crazy - just enough to run the furnace. Maybe 2000 watt. They’ve gotten pretty cheap at places like Harbor Freight. They don’t weigh much and are quieter than they used to be c

Look at your furnace. Is it connected to power with a cord and plug or does it have a power switch? If it has a cord you’re golden. If it has a switch you can call out a sparky to convert it.

Power out? No worries! Unplug furnace and plug in an extension cord -I’d recommend 12 gauge. Set generator outside, plug in extension cord and fire it up!

There are many other more complicated and more expensive ways to do it but this setup will keep the pipes from freezing. Use the second outlet on the generator to charge your phones and such.

      Keep warm!

      @Steve-Miller thanks!

It's too late for this storm, but we definitely should get a generator!

Hopefully this winter system will just be some snow and cold days. Since it's already super cold, I'm not worried about ice, which is the really destructive thing.

Although... "some cold days" - ugh, I just looked at the forecast and it looks like it's really cold for like the next nine days. That's a long stretch.

      -_-

I guess I'm lucky. Today will be a random high of 78F. Sunday will be another warm day but the wind speeds technically moderate will be ridiculous. Monday plunges back to cold at 63/41 but the wind speeds won't stop. Tuesday starts a run of plain cold days and nights.

The storm looks bad. Stay safe, everyone.

Currently -22°C (-8°F), feels like -25°C (-11°F). Tomorrow we are currently predicted to get 8-12cm of snow, which isn’t really a lot. The only problem is that I live in a very windy, flat area with lots of open farmland. So the snow will blow around and drift on the roads for days. The next week is going to be yucky.

My sister-in-law and I'm going to assume my brother, cousins, and all of my relatives in NYS are expecting a hard time. SIL tried to buy a snowblower but they sold out. She said she's going to have to shovel. I told her not to over-exert herself. She said it was clear but about to hit.

I've experienced these storms. I remember throwing boiling water at my car's door lock, clearing snow and ice from the windows, and shoveling snow just to get in the car and go to work. I told her I hoped every random thing that can go right would do that.

Today was 78 F and low of only 60 F. Tomorrow will be the last warm day forecast 75 F with huge increase in wind and then if iirc the temperatures will drop for an extended number of days.

They keep changing their mind about whether the lowest temperature will be 39 F or 40 F. I'm hoping for 39 F to beak last year's record. / Nerd mode

We’re looking at 15-18”, all coming today. It turns to wintry mix around dinner time.

I need to shovel my front walk, and a small portion of my driveway. I plan on going out every 2 1/2 hours or so to keep the effort manageable.

My gym is closed today, so this will be my workout. But still I should have no problem closing my rings.

We got a lot over night, probably close to a foot, I would guess, and it’s still coming down. It’s supposed to continue snowing heavily about the next 8 hours, so Mr SK is planning to go out and shovel soon as well, so he can break it up into more manageable stages.

It’s just started here - maybe an inch so far. We are on the northern edge of the storm, so the forecasts are varying wildly - anything from 10 cm to 25 cm. We shall see!

We got maybe 2-3 of inches downtown Chicago? Perhaps another inch into early afternoon. Still cold, temps in the low teens.

We're getting a bit more snow than expected. Woke up to an inch or so (the original prediction), but then the snow machine revved up. There was mention of the possibility of lake effect snow, so things could get interesting...

I just took a loaf of sourdough bread out of the oven. Looking forward to hot soup and fresh bread for lunch!
