Wapo, NYT, The Atlantic, The Dispatch. I pay for a few podcasts and/or substacks - Sam Harris, Andrew Sullivan, Ken White, Matt Yglesias. I think that's it. Nate Silver during election season only.

I hardly ever look at that site, not for any particular reason, only just because it's not on my radar. Do you recommend it?

It’s a center right never-trumpian group. If you’re the kind the person who seeks a range of views but doesn’t want to dive into cult fandom in the attempt then it’s a great site.

Most people aren’t looking for a range of views, they’re looking for confirmation. So I only recommend it selectively.

I pay for TPM, The Guardian, and three substacks: The Contrarians, Robert Reich, and Paul Krugman. WaPo is not trustworthy, and the NYTimes has really questionable judgement, so I bid them farewell last year.

Other sites I visit regularly, but not necessarily often: Politico and ProPublica. I also visit JMG every day but it's free.

          The industrial revolution cheapened everything.

Yeah I’ll peruse politico and/or the hill if there’s some big inside baseball political story that I know they’ll cover better than the majors.

I’ll look at Reuters now and then.

Just for comparison, we had a thread called News Sources back in April, with more recommendations. I couldn’t figure out how to link directly to it here.

Thanks everyone! I wasn’t necessarily looking for more news sources, although this thread and the earlier one that @realplayer reminded us of are helpful.

I was more just curious about how many news sources people actually pay for.(actually, I included Pianist Magazine and that’s not news! 😄

I imagine that in the past, most people (?) had a newspaper subscription and they had the paper delivered to their house. These days, very few people do that, and we have access to all this stuff online, but some of it of course is paywalled. …

BBC TV licence (which gets us lots of freeview channels), Private Eye.
Occasionally buy the FinancialTimes, iPaper, Daily Mail.

I still get The NY Times, but I will have to subscribe to some alternatives. It has soft-pedaled so many of Trump abuses.

I wouldn’t mind paying for one or two other good news outlets. Haven’t looked into Substack but I gather following several Substacks can get expensive.

Currently subscribe to WaPo but the rightward slant (and it so obvious - to the point of being comical) and sanewashing of the current administration is becoming more than I can bear. Had thought of switching over to the NYT but with everyone bending the knee I’m not sure it’s worth the trouble.

OTOH I’ve pretty much divorced myself from political discussion until the current nightmare ends. I do send $ to wiki and the Guardian but don’t much read either one.

Thinking of using the public library as a point of access for expensive publications like The Atlantic. Has anyone tried this?

Our library gives me online access to many publications from home, definitely all the biggies. Printed copies of many magazines and newspapers at the library. Current issues can be read at the library and you can check out back issues.

                              The online access is amazing.

@Steve-Miller yep, those are my complaints about WaPo and NYT.

@realplayer and @wtg my uni library provides access to tons of news outlets, but for whatever reason, they don’t have the Atlantic online version, which was why I ended up subscribing. I got one of those deals but I’ll have to decide whether to renew or not.

We still pay for our "local" newspaper (The Daily Press). I also pay for the NYTimes and Krugman. Like most academics, I'm a bit spoiled by having library access so I don't actually have to pay for lots of news sources (WSJ, for instance).

This is not a random slice of the population, you know. 🕶 😊

Same. WSJ is definitely one that comes to mind, and also CHE. Those are practically on speed dial in my browser when I go to the library page.
