... and says the Democrats are not behind the CR. About time they showed some spine.

Schumer says Democrats will not support 'partisan' funding bill passed by House Republicans to avert shutdown

Speaking on the Senate floor, Senator Chuck Schumer, the Democratic minority’s leader, said this afternoon that Democrats will not provide the necessary votes to adopt the stopgap funding bill passed by House Republicans, which includes cuts to vital services and programs.

Senate rules mean that 60 votes are needed to move legislation forward, and Republicans only have 53 seats – and 52 votes, given Rand Paul’s stated opposition to to the House bill.

    Here are Schumer’s remarks:

Funding the government should be a bipartisan effort. But Republicans chose a partisan path, drafting their Continuing Resolution without any input, any input, from Congressional Democrats.

Because of that, Republicans do not have the votes in the Senate to invoke cloture on the House CR.

Our caucus is unified on a clean April 11th CR that will keep the government open and give Congress time to negotiate bipartisan legislation that can pass. We should vote on that.

I hope our Republican colleagues will join us to avoid a shutdown on Friday.

It turns out he doesn't have any spine at all.

Shutdown breakthrough: Senator Chuck Schumer of New York, the Democratic leader, on Thursday broke with many in his party and said he would vote for a Republican-written stopgap spending bill to keep federal funding flowing past a midnight deadline on Friday, making a forceful case for why Democrats could not allow a shutdown that most of them have demanded. “A shutdown would give Donald Trump, Elon Musk and DOGE the keys to the city, state and country,” he said on the Senate floor.

I don't agree it was a "forceful case." It was closer to word salad than to a forceful case.

Democratic politicians wonder why they don't get support from their constituencies. What's to support?

AOC may be getting ready to unseat Schumer. I will help a little.
Schumer is the reason Al Franken was booted.

Yeah, Schumer and Gillibrand, and she's on board w/ Schumer on the CR. What a big dissappointment she turned out to be.

Sadly, I have a hard time imagining AOC being able to carry NY State, it's a whole other ballgame to NYC. But if she goes for it, I'll be tempted to help as well.

Schumer's idiotic decision is going to create a really bad schism in the party.

                  From Nancy Pelosi:

“Donald Trump and Elon Musk have offered the Congress a false choice between a government shutdown or a blank check that makes a devastating assault on the well-being of working families across America,” Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi said in a statement. “Let’s be clear: neither is a good option for the American people. But this false choice that some are buying instead of fighting is unacceptable.”

“Democratic senators should listen to the women,” she continued. “Appropriations leaders Rosa DeLauro and Patty Murray have eloquently presented the case that we must have a better choice: a four-week funding extension to keep government open and negotiate a bipartisan agreement. America has experienced a Trump shutdown before – but this damaging legislation only makes matters worse. Democrats must not buy into this false choice. We must fight back for a better way. Listen to the women, For The People.”

Schumer is clearly bought and paid for. He was parroting Republican talking points about "waste, fraud, and abuse," in Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid, the other day.

In fact, these programs have intricate auditing systems and a police force (yes, police) as it stands. The police are a unit who spy on Social Security recipients and bring cases against them. This isn't well known information but you can research it easily enough.

The real reason for this BS is the oligarchy wants the entire Social Security Act privatized or eliminated.

Both Senators from NH voted with Schumer in allowing the bill to advance. Shaheen voted for the CR, Hassan did not. I have wasted no time letting them know what I think of their shenanigans. We'll be looking for new candidates going forward.

Here's Trump using the exact rhetoric Schumer used...

I saw Schumer also talking about, "waste, fraud, and abuse."

These programs don't have a lot of waste, fraud, or abuse.

I wish Schumer and Pelosi would resign.

Thought experiment. The government shuts down. Then what? Who makes the choices in the current government what gets funded, what stays shut down? Who gets blamed in Right wing media for the shutdown?

The pain of the Republican choices need to filter down to the voters that supported them for anything to change...

I’m going to guess he got told by members of his caucus that they weren’t going to vote against it, and he didn’t want to be against it and lose the vote anyway.

He is the Senate minority leader. He is as much a part of the government as any other politician in "the government."

He rationalizes his vote and virtually declares Trump a king in only a few sentences.

I saw the headline and made a mental note of it but I can't find the link now.

I cannot agree with the word "now". They already owned it completey. They control all three branches of government.

For caving into a partisan bill without a fight, the Democrats now share some degree of ownership of what's happening.

What's more it is horribly dishonest to vote for cloture then vote against the bill as Schumer, and I think 7 others did. What a charade.
