I think that supporting good journalism is important. ProPublica comes to mind. And some of the people on Medium and Substack. I think the folks at Tangle do some good work.

And probably not quite what you were talking about but....we're also supporting organizations that provide food to people, ranging from immediate needs during natural disasters (World Central Kitchen), to community based support like our own @BeeLady 's work at Mill City Grows. We believe that having access to food is one of the keys to both national and world stability.

@wtg good point about supporting journalism.

I agree with your comments about the importance of access to food (that's why I donate food through our local Krogers, but your post reminds me that I should give to our local food bank)

But I would like to support efforts that directly oppose or seek to block Trumps harmful endeavors.

SK, for direct opposition I would think the ACLU would be the go-to.

I believe a fundamental key to our present situation is the presence of lies in the media universe. Or, should I say, propaganda. Therefore Pro Publica was my #1 choice for donations this year. Also, keep subscribing to those publications that have excellent journalism. The best reporting I see overall is in the New Yorker.

I just watched a podcast with Jennifer Rubin and Norm Eisen at The Contrarian and it was really good for me. They mentioned the ACLU lawsuit, but also others that Norm himself is involved in. In short, resistance has started. I recommend subscribing to their new substack.

I don't now if you can watch this without a subscription, but it's worth a try: https://open.substack.com/pub/contrarian/p/jen-rubin-and-norm-eisen-on-executive?r=n5ktx&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web&timestamp=72.3&showWelcomeOnShare=false

I thought maybe campaign donations to Dem AG candidates down the road might be another route to go. Like the ACLU, they can bring suit on a lot of these issues.

I hold the ACLU in high esteem. I agree that you couldn't go wrong donating to them. There are also many other great organizations doing good and necessary work in the legal system.

I've found that many non-profits take in a lot of money but do very little to affect change, help people, or get far in achieving their stated goals.

Goodwill comes to mind. I wonder how much money they take in. I've observed they do little more than run thrift shops and serve free lunches.

Goodwill is not on point but it's a good example of large non-profits that essentially operates as for profit corporations IMO. Those controlling such entities make a disportionate amount of money in comparison achieving their stated goals.

United Way doesn't impress me either.

Many foundations operate this same way.

Anyway, my suggestion is to support journalism by finding independent journalists who are exceptional at what they do, inform the public about vital information related to promoting knowledge and providing exceptional analysis all of which is necessary for citizens to promote freedom in the US and globally.

I suggest donating to these people to help them continue to do their work.

My suggestion applies equally to small news outlets whose work you might want to support.

Another outlet to consider... @pique posted this link that got lost, so I'm reposting it now. I listened to a couple of the discussions and thought they had value.

                    https://www.jewsunitedfordemocracy.org/

Based on the discussion with Jeffrey Goldberg of the Atlantic and what I've read in that publication, I'd be inclined to recommend both the JUFD website and the Atlantic. I like how the magazine is being run by Lauren Powell Jobs. I think the writers have a lot of independence and they do quality work.

@ShiroKuro - I looked indivisible up and it mostly looked like an aggregation site for people to find local groups to join. A when I looked at what came up near my zip code, llooked like the various groups were organized to support the Dem presidential campaign last year. One looked like it was also organizing for local elections. Mayor, trustees, school board.

Freedom of the press under fire.

CBS says it will turn over an unedited transcript of its October interview with Kamala Harris to the Federal Communicationss Commission, part of President Donald Trump’s ongoing fight with the network over how it handled a story about his opponent.

Trump sued CBS for $10 million over the “60 Minutes” interview, claiming it was deceptively edited to make Harris look good. Published reports said that CBS’ parent company, Paramount, has been talking to Trump’s lawyers about a settlement.

The network said Friday that it was compelled by Brendan Carr, Trump’s appointee as FCC chairman, to turn over the transcripts and camera feeds of the interview for a parallel investigation by the commission. “60 Minutes” has resisted releasing transcripts for this and all of its interviews, to avoid second-guessing of its editing process.

The case, particularly a potential settlement, is being closely watched by advocates for press freedom and by journalists within CBS, whose lawyers called Trump’s lawsuit “completely without merit” and promised to vigorously fight it after it was filed..

More details on the Paramount+ sale.

The request came as the FCC reviews Paramount Global’s planned merger with Skydance Media. The agency is led by Trump appointee Brendan Carr, who’s threatened to revoke broadcast licenses for stations owned by networks that’ve drawn the president’s ire under the agency’s authority to ensure that public airwaves operate in the public interest..
