So, I decided to buy an Aeropress. It’s gotten such universal praise. I thought it might give me some of the character of a French press with less mess.
It does make a fine cup, but a very CLEAN cup. I could use a bit more body, and I know there are ways to experiment with grind, brew time, etc. Right now it’s quite similar to my filtered pour-over. I give it a short “bloom,” then add more water and wait a full minute before plunging.
One issue is that the directions ask you to listen for a hissing sound near the end of the plunging, and I just can’t hear anything. Maybe it’s my ears. But it needs to be done correctly to pop out the grounds.

Congratulations! Have been an Aeropress user for 20 years or more when making a cup just for myself; we use an old Melitta electric drip machine to make four cups in the morning for the two of us. On the rare occasion that I do make another cup in the afternoon for just me, I use the Aeropress. A much superior cup to electric drip.

Have never heard the hissing. With my hearing, I don't hear a lot of things. Many complications come from reading the directions. I am rarely troubled by that.
I quit coffee. Discovered roasted barley. No caffeine.
Will be trying roasted barley in the aeropress when I get to Tucson next month. I put it in the expresso machine now. It is not coffee, but I like it. -

I have never heard of Aeropress so I just did a little googling. It looks like it uses a lot more coffee grounds than a French press. Is that so? I'm ready 2-3 tablespoons of grounds for one cup of coffee?
@Bernard it comes with its own plastic scoop, but I don’t use it; it looks like it doesn’t hold enough coffee.
I use about the same amount as I do for pour over. That’s 1-1/2 standard coffee scoops of whole beans, and then I grind them. It yields what I guess is a 6-8 oz. cup.
I am not going to go down the rabbit hole of gram scales and lab equipment, as some do.
The difference is a French press requires a coarse grind and 4-min. brewing time, and you get an oilier, richer body. Aeropress is med.-fine grind and 1-2 min. brew time, thinner body.
