Jimmy Donaldson, the 27-year-old online content creator and entrepreneur known as MrBeast, is by any reasonable metric one of the most popular entertainers on the planet. His YouTube channel, to which he posts his increasingly elaborate and expensively produced videos, has 400 million subscribers – more than the population of the United States of America and equivalent to the total number of native English speakers currently alive. It’s close to twice as many subscribers as Elon Musk has X followers, and over 100 million more than Taylor Swift has Instagram followers. And that number, 400 million, does not account for the people who watch MrBeast’s videos in passing, or who are aware of his cultural presence because of their children, or who just sort of know who he is but don’t have any intricate awareness as to why he is famous.

Should add one more category to that bit at the end: People like me who had never heard of MrBeast before reading the article.

More proof that I'm not one of the "in" crowd

Same here. Never heard of him, and I just looked at his YT channel and I don't recognize the video-look he uses, so I suspect I've never even seen him in passing.

        That's crazy!

I've seen mentions of MrBeast elsewhere in internet commentaries, but have never watched his videos.

I'd never heard of him either. Another big business from the YT platform. Fine. Kudos for his charitable works. From reading the article, I don't get the sense that his output is especially meaningful. Fine.

However, he is close friends with Logan Paul and Jake Paul, who endorsed Trump in 2024, and he is also a fan of Elon Musk.

That's about all I need to know. Won't be subscribing.

I watched one of his videos. It didn’t draw me in.

I'd be more worried if I was in the in crowd.

I don't think any of us here is his target demographic. Thank goodness! 😄

Initially, I confused him with Rick Beato, a different guy on YouTube who actually does have some insightful videos about music, both popular and classical. He's worth a look...has an unassuming manner but is knowledgeable and informative.
