It's most probably federal law that's it's visible. I can't remember a car except my '64 Beetle that didn't have it. I always assumed it was for law enforcement reasons.

Had a Nesco, which I think is similar to your roaster. Used it a couple of times for turkey but wasn’t very satisfied with the results. Gave it to a friend wh loved cooking ribs and kraut in it.
