How much to tip tuner "for gas"
-
I called the piano tuner who installed my dampp chaser to ask about removing the tank for transit. He said he would be in town and could come by and do it for me. We were planning to have Mr. SK do it, but I said ok.
I asked if there would be a charge for this visit and he said, just give him a tip for gas...
So, he lives in a town about 65 miles away from here. He said he would be in my town already...
What is the appropriate amount to tip "for gas" in this situation?? I don't want to be stingy, but on the other hand, this could have been a task for Mr. SK...
At this point it would be awkward to say "in that case nevermind"
So, what's an appropriate amount to tip for gas, and how should I be thinking about the distance here??
TIA!!

130 miles/20 MPG = 6.5 gallons of gas @ $4.00/gallon = $26.00. I'd probably tip $25-30.

Thanks, that's a helpful way to think about/calculate it!

I will prep cash, $20 since he’s already going to be in town for another tuning.

Always an awkward way to do business...
I appreciate tips but they aren't expected. There are times I will "swing by" for something quick when I am nearby (Like getting a pencil out of a grand) and not charge. Then sometimes owners will hand me $5-$20 and tell me they are glad I could stop by. -
If he has gas, why are you paying him? He should be paying you.

I think $20 is a perfectly appropriate amount. Especially if he’s in town already.
