A friend has moved from the US to Latvia, and I'm trying to figure out the best way to communicate with her via text and/or calls. She texted me this morning for the first time in months. She no longer has her US mobile number and now has a number out of (I assume, I didn't check) Latvia. She asked if I had WhatsApp or Viber so that we could talk (and I'm assuming text) on a non-cellular platform.

As always I'm concerned about Meta getting its hot little hands on my information, so I'm not keen on WhatsApp.

Is anyone familiar with Viber? From the little I've read it sounds like it might be OK, but I'm way past my pay grade when it comes to evaluating these kinds of apps.

For those who do international stuff...any and all thoughts appreciated!

We use Signal with the kids. It’s end-to-end encrypted.

when my son moved to France, he asked me to start emailing him and calling him on WhatsApp.
I’ve been very happy with it. It works well, and I’m told it’s one of the more secure ways message.

but I can’t sayI really understand it. I just use whatever my kids tell me too.
