Interesting. If only it were so easy!

@Mik said in McCartney gives a piano lesson:

Ironically, the piano (keyboard instruments in general) is probably the easiest acoustic instrument with which to play simple melodies and/or simple chords. A beginner typically has to struggle quite a bit more to produce a tone using most other acoustic instruments.

Still, it may be amusing to see Paul McCartney yelling at a 5 year old beginner "curve your fingers ... count ... you gotta count ... !"

I’ve often thought that the piano is the easiest instrument to start, and the hardest instrument to excel at.

Is there another instrument with the same potential for musical complexity? I’m thinking here in terms of being able to play melody and accompaniment notes.

I don’t think so… well, maybe the accordion? Other than that, classical guitar comes close. Ok and maybe the harp, but I don’t know anything about harp music. But I think the complexity of piano music (esp the hardest classical repertoire) generally surpasses the complexity of music written for these other instruments.

Or at least that’s what I tell myself when my fingers are all tied up in knots at the keyboard! 😅

The organ - you feet got to deal with their own keyboard too!

Segovia said something like The guitar is an easy instrument to play badly. The piano also qualifies as easy to play badly. I can prove that.

Me too! I always say I started at horrendous, rose up to pathetic and now I aspire to be mediocre.

Ax, thank you! I completely forgot the organ! (apologies to Bach and organists everywhere!)
