How an 80-year-old German discount chain became America’s hottest grocer.

Aldi has been in our area for a long time. We went to one of the stores probably 15 or 20 years ago and were completely unimpressed at the time. Maybe five years ago, my walking buddy kept talking about the great deals she was getting so I figured it was worth checking out. It's become a stop on our weekly grocery trip.

We love our Aldi, although we do not use it for major shopping. It's great when you only need a couple of things and don't want to deal with the huge stores.

We use Aldi occasionally. They had a special wool/knitting week starting last Thursday and MrsA bought about £50 of the stuff.

However, Lidl is preferred for price, though I get milk and eggs and whatever is cheaper from Farmfoods (my first port of call which happens to be adjacent to Lidl).

Second choice is Lidl, then thirdly but regularly once a week an ASDA superstore but only because they have an excellent reduced section.

Interesting. Have not seen anything like that at our Aldi store. There are all kinds of Aldi Finds but pretty much all household and garden items.

          Lidl

Ton of them on the east coast of the US, but nothing anywhere near me.

Good for eggs, milk, and some bread.

Sometimes it has very economically priced small pack smoked salmon that is very hard to beat.

Very good for clean, pre-packaged fresh/raw fish and meats. The local grocery chain stores may have cheaper fish/meats but not as cleanly packaged.

Not that good for fresh fruits and vegetables. The local grocery chain stores typically have better looking fresh fruits and vegetables.

Typically don’t have the widest selections, but often clean and not too crowded.
