Not a Halloween phenomenon. It’s a new scam.

Americans who use tap-to-pay lose thousands due to a new scam

If you use contactless payment on your phone, the Better Business Bureau has a new warning about a scam that could cost you thousands.

“Ghost tapping is a scam that targets tap-to-pay cards and mobile wallets. Tap-to-pay works through Near Field Communication (NFC), which allows devices to exchange data at very close range.”

Is this related to RFID compromising your card?

Wait. There's a way around this, no? Don't tap to pay but more fundamental I think there is a metal card holder that stops your card from being read. I want one.

@Daniel Yes, it doesn’t even have to be metal. I have a flexible sleeve that protects the card. Also my shoulder bag’s front pocket has the blocking technology embedded in the fabric.

Don’t you have to approve tap to pay? Mine won’t pay unless I either unlock with face id, or type in my lock code.

I've had a sale ring up and put my card close to the screen. That's all it took.

It seems like cards are broadcasting data?

I have never had to approve tap to pay.

@CHAS I think we’re looking at 2 different things. I tap to pay with my phone (ApplePay), and it needs my unlock code or face ID before it lets me pay. I don’t usually do the credit card tap, because I don’t like to haul my wallet out of my bag, and then find the card.

I suppose someone could ghost tap my credit card? But it’s never out somewhere easy!

I am not convinced that the various RF-protective sleeves/fabric/wallets etc. actually work as advertised. I'd say, after you get your product, test it -- put your tap-to-pay card in your product, then try to scan it at a tap-to-pay terminal and see if it still works.

Why aren't you? Have you tried this experiment? We're living in a bad dream if, in fact, anyone can steal your money out of thin air!
