I remember when Dawn dish soap first came out. It was game changer! Dissolved grease like nothing I’ve tried before or since. Greasy pans came out squeaky clean in just a normal sink full of suds. They even washed ducks with it when they got caught in oil spills.

Then it started going downhill. It took more soap and more washes to do the same job. The latest formulation - the one with the new fragrance -doesn’t do much of anything. 🙁

Enter Reddit. Reddit is the wild west of the internet but every now and then I learn things. One thing I learned was that you can still buy the old formulation only now it’s a commercial product called “Professional manual pots and pans cleaner”. It only comes in gallons and you can buy it at Home Depot.

Reddit was right! It works just like the old stuff! 👍

Dawn strips the oils from your hands, too, if you don't wear gloves when you wash dishes. Or at least the old stuff from years ago did. Mr wtg figured this out back then. His hands would get so dry the skin on his fingertips would get these deep cracks that were very painful; he would have band-aids on nearly every finger. We switched soaps to Seventh Generation and the problem was solved.

I did buy a bottle of the Dawn extra strength foaming soap for the challenging jobs but the perfume smell is awful and I ended up throwing it away...

We use the Dawn grease cutter stuff for cleaning the stovetop. Works a treat. The Dawn dish soap works fine for what I use it for - cleaning the nonstick frying pans and anything that is not dishwasher safe. But none of that requires much power.

The marketing on this stuff is interesting. They’re pitching water savings based on fewer sinks full of water need to clean a given number of pots and pans. I daresay you’ll also cut down on the need to wash things twice.

They also point out how concentrated it is. 1 1/2 teaspoons in 2 1/2 gallons of water for general cleaning. It’s no wonder it dries out skin, especially if you use as much of it as you would with other detergents.

I use Dawn because I'd rather economize than buy what I'd rather have-- something without harsh chemicals.

It makes too many suds, and it's difficult and time consuming to rinse anything you wash with it, imho.
