A number of countries in this hemisphere have gone through periods of military dictatorship. We can't assume it's impossible in the USA.

@Big_Al I was aware of bits and pieces of what happened in Argentina. That article filled in a lot of gaps in my understanding of the history. Thanks for posting it.

This seems like a good thread to add another look at history that may be relevant to us today. This article by a historian appeared in the Atlantic last week; this is a non-paywall version.

Ninety-two years ago this month, on Monday morning, January 30, 1933, Adolf Hitler was appointed the 15th chancellor of the Weimar Republic. In one of the most astonishing political transformations in the history of democracy, Hitler set about destroying a constitutional republic through constitutional means. What follows is a step-by-step account of how Hitler systematically disabled and then dismantled his country’s democratic structures and processes in less than two months’ time—specifically, one month, three weeks, two days, eight hours, and 40 minutes. The minutes, as we will see, mattered.

        OMG I don't think I knew that...

I don't know if I have the stomach to read it now....

Well, there was a fascist coup attempt against FDR. The plot involved installing a general as head of state. The attempt failed when the general betrayed the fascists.

            It certainly could happen here.
