A US government shutdown could be two days away after President-elect Donald Trump called on Republican lawmakers to reject a cross-party funding bill.

Trump urged Congress to scrap the deal and pass a streamlined bill. His intervention followed heavy criticism of the bill by tech billionaire Elon Musk.

Congressman Steve Scalise, the Republican House Majority Leader, indicated on Wednesday night that the bill was dead after Trump denounced it.

The short-term funding bill will need to be passed by Congress by the end of week to prevent many federal government offices from shuttering beginning on Saturday.

And if we're trying to cut spending, why is Trump insisting that the debt ceiling be raised? And why did the Congresscritters include a pay raise for themselves?

I'm confused. Someone please explain this to me.

“Musk and Ramaswamy are firing off tweets blasting Johnson’s handiwork to hearty attaboys from MAGA-land and calling for a government shutdown that nobody in Washington wants or had anticipated,” Kilgore wrote. “No matter how it turns out, this is a disaster for Johnson, who will soon face a close reelection vote for Speaker. A sudden humiliation at the hands of the unelected co-director of an unfunded and unofficial entity won’t make it easier. And it’s also bad news for the incoming administration, the Congress, and the country. If Elon Musk can work this sort of destructive wonder in a matter of hours, who’s going to tell him there are limits to his power?”

In another post, Musk asserted that "no bills should be passed" by Congress until Trump takes office on January 20.

so should we call him President Musk or King Elon I?

I’ll shed no tears for Johnson. He needs to anyway. But then we have this:

In another post, Musk asserted that "no bills should be passed" by Congress until Trump takes office on January 20.

The House on Thursday torpedoed Speaker Mike Johnson’s (R-La.) plan B to avert a government shutdown and suspend the debt limit, dealing a blow to the GOP leader and catapulting the conference back to square one as it stares down Friday’s funding deadline.

The measure — which Johnson rolled out hours roughly three hours before the vote — failed to clear the chamber in a 174-235-1 vote, falling short of the two-thirds threshold needed for passage under the fast-track suspension of the rules process.
