I don't think there was a 'well enough' to leave alone. The market changed, mail isn't as important as it used to be, and the higher value stuff faces competition. Putting aside the pension stuff, Congress still mandates 6 day a week delivery for all routes, including the 71% of them which are money-losing. And Congress has to approve any fee increases and rarely does so. As a result they're kind of screwed.

I'll have to disagree with you. Mail is vital. There are business and government letters that must be mailed.
FedEx isn't going to deliver the mail to everyone, meaning every one. FedEx isn't going to mail for a nominal fee. Neither will happen five or six days a week, or ever.
Privatization would screw every one. and be a detriment to the economy.
Not every part of society was meant to be nor should be profit bearing, e.g. The Social Security Act and its constituent parts.

This was the exact plan put into motion when lobbyist controlled politicians put into place an unprecedented law requiring the USPS to pre-fund pensions 75 years in advance.

The USPS was giving $12 billion in annual discounts to private mailers for pre-sorting. Sounds like a good business plan. /s
Even though the USPS does not get tax money to run its operations, thanks to G.W. Bush, money that USPS collected for future health and pensions for its workers has been used to reduce the federal deficit.
If the USPS dies, it's because politicians--totally lacking in vision and pride for this country, and totally beholden to private interests--wanted it to die.

@Daniel I wouldn't support privatization. But they should allow them flexibility in reducing frequency of service at least for regular mail 2-3 times a week would be fine for non-express stuff) and set their own rates. Seems like that would give them enough control over their costs and revenue to let them survive.

Canada Post is facing the same struggles. There have been multiple strikes over the past couple years because Canada Post employees want zero cuts in hours or jobs but it’s losing so much money. I am an advocate of keeping Canada Post because in rural Canada no one delivers mail to people except Canada Post because they are required to. That includes packages and official mail. So it is a necessary service. However, I don’t believe daily letter mail should be a requirement and a reduction in the number of post offices would make sense. They did eventually come to a settlement that Canada Post employees hated but they are still in operation.

So it was mother's day last Sunday and my birthday mid week.
Daughter in London on Tuesday 9th sent us two cards and a parcel by Royal Mail post office, and ordered a box of flowers for Sunday via a private internet company.
The flowers arrived Monday
One card arrived on Tuesday (taking a week) the other card and parcel arrived Friday (9 days).
I quote "so allowing a week isn't enough even for first class, next year it'll be sent two weeks in advance".
Now we live only a few miles from a distribution centre and England is, let's face it, small.
Honestly, Royal Mail has gone to the dogs for service. Its cheaper than driving there of course
