If something as simple as a T-shirt requires all those resources, Kismai wants to make it last.
I can't help thinking he might actually be shortening the life of the shirt with his intensive washing methods.
I know that when scouring sheep's fleece, enzymes are not good. They will deteriorate the fibers. I use Dawn Ultra (the one that doesn't contain enzymes) and it does a fantastic job.
As for laundry, I use Mrs. Meyers, preferably Lavender scented, which does contain enzymes. But I'm not a wear-it-once-must-be-laundered person. Even more so now that I don't have a job.

Dollar Tree is $1.50? It was $1.25 a minute ago. Good grief.
Roommate was given his mother's washer and dryer. I already had a dryer my neighbor gave me on the carport. We have a stacking set in the utility shed.
There are two washers and three dryers.
He's still be doing his laundry at the laundromat for the foreseeable future. I'll still be doing my laundry by hand.
I've decided if I find a place that doesn't have washer and dryer hook-ups, I can buy a portable washer that hooks up to the sink (Danby, Canada) and a portable electric dryer.
I hope I will find one, but I've decided to be flexible about this so I have more possible options.

I've also read that most people end up using too much detergent on a regular basis that adds to the problems.

I followed that Reddit for a while. Very active. Generally goes like this:
“My kid plays football and smells like a goat. How do I get the funk out of his clothes?”
“Wash them in for a long time in hot water with a detergent containing lipase.”
“Oh noes! I can’t do that because:
I won’t use chemicals, only vinegar, baking soda and miracle natural products that influencers sell on TikTok.
I only shop at Herrods/Dollar Tree/yard sales/Tiffany/dumpster dive and can’t find that detergent. And Procter/Gamble is a terrible company because … reasons.
I refuse to use hot water, Mama told me it sets stains, bad for environment, too poor to pay to heat water, no water heater, live in cave.
I only use the shortest wash setting. I’m astonishingly busy every minute of the day and night and can’t take time to let the washer run. Electric costs a fortune and I use only the most expensive European washing machine you can buy because the salesman told me it would wash anything in ten minutes. Repairman comes next week - hope he can get it running again”
”Oh. Your kid stinks because you make him wear dirty clothes. Why do you ask questions if you don’t want answers?”
I love Reddit.

Lots of discussion on those little portable laundry machines on RV forums. Consensus is that they don’t work very well. Too small, too slow, nothing gets clean, anything larger than crew socks comes out a tangled mess.
Insist on a place with laundry hookups.

If you don't have laundry facilities find a fluff-n-fold, and hang things up between wearings.
Other than that? Just stick it in the washer and have at it. It doesn't need to become an artisanal endeavor.
Also buy good quality clothing. It will last. I wear pretty much exclusively Lands End button down shirts and mock turtles. For summer it's Koloa Surf t shirts and Columbia Brewhaha shorts. I wish I could still get the same quality Ocean Pacific t shirts. They were fantastic quality.
