Several top Democrats privately tell us the rising pressure of party congressional leaders and close friends will persuade President Biden to decide to drop out of the presidential race, as soon as this weekend.

Why it matters: The 81-year-old president, now self-isolating with COVID, remains publicly dug in. But privately he's resigned to mounting pressure, bad polls, and untenable scrutiny making it impossible to continue his campaign, the Democrats tell us.

Behind the scenes: The private message, distilled to its bluntest form: The top leaders of his party, his friends and key donors believe he can't win, can't change public perceptions of his age and acuity, and can't deliver congressional majorities.

Don't know why I didn't think of him. Mark Kelly.

He gets bonus points because if he is ever incapacitated, he has an identical twin brother who could step in.

            😆

Anyway, I really hope we get to the stage of Doug saying "I told you so" soon.

A person with knowledge of the projections said the Biden campaign now expects it will raise only 25% of the big donor money it had originally projected to raise in July — that’s a further downgrade from the expectation last week that large-dollar fundraising would be down by as much as 50%. The money has “dried up,” this person said.

              https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/2024-election/biden-world-braces-possibility-president-steps-rcna162494

              And the inner circle:

Biden’s stunningly halting debate performance – and the downward spiral of his candidacy since – has sparked serious discontent inside the White House, with plenty of fingers pointed at senior advisers. Officials in and out of the administration have quietly questioned the intentions of those in the president’s inner circle – and whether their choice to stay-the-course-at-all-costs stems from a fear of acknowledging they misread the situation or a desire to preserve their proximity to power.

“This decision is not just about Biden,” a former aide who had worked with Biden for decades told CNN. “There are other senior advisers who are considering whether they played the right role in this.”

The frustration with the president’s advisers has permeated all levels of the White House as staff wrestles with a lack of information and decisions about their own professional future.

Biden's family starts discussing his possible exit plan from the 2024 race

The president’s family members have discussed how he would want to end his re-election bid on his own timing and with a carefully calculated plan in place.

                      One step further....

If President Joe Biden were to not only acknowledge Democrats’ worries that he’s hurting the party’s chances at the poll but decides to resign from the presidency altogether, Kamala Harris would immediately become the President of the United States.

This transition is outlined in the U.S. Constitution, and would make her the first woman and the first person of South Asian and African American descent to hold the office.

Like any option it has its pros and cons.
