I wonder what impact this will have on us as a country. There's something that tells me not much is going to change.

On the one hand, I suspect you're right for the most part.
But on the other hand, I am keenly aware that there are news and social media sites, right-wing talk radio etc that I never see or hear, and there is probably a good deal of generalized sentiment shared by people who frequent those places. Will this change them? Galvanize people on the fence who were leaning toward Trump but might have been less engaged otherwise? Does surviving this make Trump more likeable, more authentic?
I think in the final analysis, it benefits him.
Separate from that, this comment in the article:
“Events from last night were for a lot of us ground shaking,”
Why? why ground shaking? At this point, why would anyone be surprised by gun violence in America? And given all the hatred Trump spews, why would anyone be surprised that some of it has been turned back at him?
Anytime there's a mass shooting, a school shooting, whatever, people in the community say things like "this is not who we are."
No, this is exactly who we are.

Random observations..
Looks like Trump will try to look presidential and unifying, for as long as he can manage it.
Biden will do the same. He did three televised addresses in the 24 hours after the shooting.
I suspect that Dems calling for Biden to withdraw will back off. The GOP will be unified; the Dems can't afford to look divided.
I think Trump will get a temporary bump in the polls, but I suspect that may level out, especially if Biden keeps his head above water.
But mostly...November is a long way off. Who knows what else could happen between now and then?

If President Joe Biden were to not only acknowledge Democrats’ worries that he’s hurting the party’s chances at the poll but decides to resign from the presidency altogether, Kamala Harris would immediately become the President of the United States.
This transition is outlined in the U.S. Constitution, and would make her the first woman and the first person of South Asian and African American descent to hold the office.
Like any option it has its pros and cons.
