A few photos from tonight’s celebration:

The last vestige of Miller family Christmas. That’s herring in cream sauce and black olives. I couldn’t get anyone else to as much as taste it. Time has passed me by, and Ohio people do things differently. Those plate are Sharon’s mother’s - I get kind of goofy with sentiment at Christmas. The serving dishes were my mother’s.

Roast pork tenderloin with spiced apricot glaze. Sharon absolutely nailed this one - best I’ve ever had. I was afraid it might be too spicy for the toddlers but they ate every bit of it.

The spread. I had little to do with any of this as Sharon gets nervous when I’m in her kitchen. Everything was great!

Dinner! Plates are Johnson Bros. transferware, some inherited, some new. I love that stuff. Whisky is the prizewinning stuff stuff I learned about on this forum. I bought a case and gave bottles as gifts. It’s very good!

Best gift of the year. It sticks to the wall by way of a big fan. Big hit with the grands!

@ShiroKuro I made a lasagna brunch for some friends a few weeks ago. Trick is to make the sauce the night before, then it's just a matter of assembly on the day, before popping it in the oven.

That’s smart. If I could figure out a good way to streamline it, I might make it more often.

Everyone was quite pleased with the outcome. It was super yummy!!

@Steve-Miller The food looks scrumptious! I love herring in cream sauce. I used to have a set of Johnson Bros. "Friendly Village", gave it away. I miss it sometimes, but how many sets does a person need? 🙂

We gave away a ton of china when we moved but kept a set of Friendly Village. My parents set was mostly “Frozen up” but Friendly village was more common and that’s what we focused on.

Ditched the Sterling silverware years ago but I kind of miss it. Ditto the Waterford. No one wants that stuff anymore and no one entertains that way anymore.

            Pity, that. It was fun.

My mom has a fancy set of silverware, in a big wooden box that weighs a ton. When I was a kid, she used it every Thanksgiving and Christmas. I always hated it because afterwards, it had to be washed carefully by hand. That part didn’t bug me (we didn’t have a dishwasher then anyway). But she was very particular about spreading it out on a cloth to dry and then carefully wiping each one as it was put away. I hated the whole process so much.

She still has the set, it’s in perfect condition. (Actually, I wonder if it’s not sterling? It doesn’t tarnish like the kind my stepmother has.) I don’t have the heart to tell my mother I don’t want it.

Hmmm. Maybe I can figure out just how much care it needs to stay nice. I could see us using it, im ok with handwashing, as long as it doesn’t have to be spread out to dry like that….

@Steve-Miller I bought a set of sterling many years ago and I love how it looks and how it feels in the hand. Unfortunately, I discovered, after purchase, that I don't like the shape of the forks. The tines don't all extend straight on, the two outside tines lean inwards and it makes the tip narrow which makes it sometimes difficult to pick up food! It's the Chippendale pattern from Towle. I much prefer using some silverplate I have, but it doesn't feel as good. Maybe I should sell the Towle and get something else.

                    The industrial revolution cheapened everything.

Wonderful arrangement and performance in The Abbey (even at full volume 😉)
I'm learning it now on the piano, great thing about Rutter arrangements is the printed music is perfect.

Mark, love the sax! What a great gift and memories you created.

I had a Selmer Bundy clarinet in middle school. It was made of plastic. I asked my mother for a wooden one. Her reply was, "Not now; not ever." I must have caught her on a bad day!

                                          @piano-dad Congrats to the family!

For Christmas I love pulling out the china (my mom’s Noritake Oriental, bamboo motif) and her silverplate (service for 12; we have sterling for 8 from her uncle, but that’s not enough). It’s like playing dress up for the house. I don’t mind hand washing it all after guests go home. My kids stay and help with the clean up.
