I've never thought so. But maybe I'm discerning in the poetry I read.

So Mr. Kiper, running for governor in my state of NH, wrote a "funny" book in 2013 which is now tripping up his candidacy.

I don't know. Knowing the book is "supposed" to be satirical, might help pausibility? But I'm having a hard time finding anything funny about the "poems". I could shrug it off to being sophomoric, but he was 30 at the time of writing it. And it was 2013, only a little more than a decade ago. Warped sense of humor to say the least. And questionable judgement if you ask me.

Same. I find it in bad taste and to me it shows his character. And what it shows is that his character is not what I'd want in someone in public office. Although, looking at who sits in the White House, perhaps he's actually perfect for the role. /eyeroll.

As to the questions of giving someone a pass for something they did "years ago" or "in their youth" ... 12 years is not that long, and 30 (or almost 30 or whatever) is not "youth." So I personally wouldn't give him a pass.

        Mr. Mailer, "Is sex dirty?"
Norman Mailer answered that it is if it is done right.
Poetry can be pretentious, but not if it is done right.

"The man that hath no music in himself, nor is not moved with concord of sweet sounds, is fit for treasons, stratagems and spoils;” - Shakespeare
