Looks like a low-key day here... Maybe a little walk through the zoo and neighborhood later if we can get there through all the NASCAR road closures in our neighborhood!

Big family deal here. 2 briskets, home made ice cream. Bounce house. 3 generations. Dogs. Music.

I’ll try to remember to take pictures.

So I ended up making my first batch of Hinnomaki red gooseberry jam. The squirrels were going after the ripening berries a few days ago despite the cage I had around the bushes so I had to pick everything off even though the berries weren't all ripe. Gooseberries do continue to ripen a bit on the counter; they've been there since Monday. I figured it was time to get rolling.

I have about 1800g of berries from my two bushes; 1000g makes a twelve 4 oz jars.

        Berries:

        Berries cooking:

        Finished jam, cooling:

There's another jar with the bit that was left over; it will be tested tomorrow with toasted homemade sourdough bread!

Might try the other 800g with some other fruit. Strawberries or blueberries are a possibility. I also saw a recipe that adds some grated ginger, which sounded intriguing. And I just found a recipe for a gooseberry chutney, which sounds really interesting. Mr wtg is voting for chutney.

The red currant bush has tons of fruit that we haven't picked yet. The birds and squirrels have been helping themselves. Not sure if I'll get them picked before there's not enough to bother with.

My mother is here visiting until Sunday! Our first house guest in the new house! She loves it and we’re having a blast showing her around 🙂 oh and we were supposed to have bad weather today but it was pretty mild and cleared up in the afternoon.

(Oh and she likes the blue chairs, must be genetic 😆

                          The jam is delicious.

I also made the gooseberry chutney. That needs to mellow out for about a month, so I just put the jars in the basement and we'll give it a try in August sometime. But based on the taste of it I had yesterday, I think next year I'll be doing all jam and will skip the chutney. It was pretty good, but the jam was fabulous...

                            Yum!

So, you know, I don’t think I actually know what chutney is. I mean, I know the name etc but I’m not sure I’ve ever had it.

Indian chutneys are whole bunch of different things, but when I use the term chutney, it's the Western version of an Indian condiment made with fruit. It's a savory jam/preserve made with fruit, vegetables, spices, sugar, and vinegar. A classic one is mango chutney. It's used as a condiment with meats or cheese.

The recipe I used had gooseberries as the main fruit instead of mango. Also onions, raisins, ginger, red chili flakes, sugar, mustard seeds, brown sugar, apple cider vinegar, and a bit of salt.
