The tyranny of the penny
-
I was disappointed to learn, recently, that the United States has created for itself a logistical problem so stupendously stupid, one cannot help wondering if it is wise to continue to allow this nation to supervise the design of its own holiday postage stamps, let alone preside over the administration of an extensive Interstate highway system or nuclear arsenal. It’s the dumbest thing I ever heard. I have come to think of it as the Perpetual Penny Paradox.
We have a ton of pennies and other coins. Mr wtg used to collect them and we have a stash of them packed away in Marlboro boxes, sorted by denomination and year. The dimes and quarters are dated 1964 or before, so they're all silver. I have no idea why we're keeping them. Are they worth any more than face value? We know there aren't any rare ones like the 1909 S VDB penny, but I wonder if their silver content means the sell at a premium....

Very informative.
Thanks!

If this website is to believed your silver coins could be worth quite a bit over face value.

That was an interesting read about something of trivial value. The author went to great lengths to explore the subject.
I know where some of the missing pennies reside. I have a friend who has a five-gallon water jug in his bedroom that he has dropped pennies into until it was completely filled. It's too heavy to be moved without a dolly. I don't know what he intends to do with it if and when he leaves his house permanently. I suspect it will become someone else's problem, just like pennies in general.

I hope your friend's water jug is plastic and not glass. We had a glass one and it shattered completely when we gave it a slight push to move it. Shards of glass and hundreds of pennies to clean up.
