If I was 50 years younger I’d buy this house. Plenty of room to grow!

Could be beautiful, lots of room. But I don't think I could live in a place that was a juvenile detention center for 40 years. Also, being on the Nat'l Register... doesn't that mean needing approval for a lot of things?

      The industrial revolution cheapened everything.

I think it depends. Sometimes you’re not allowed to modify the exterior, sometimes restrictions apply to the interior as well. Can’t imagine the restrictions would apply to the 50’s flat roof additions but maybe the history of it being a detention center means the additions, which need new roofs right now, are protected as well.

Prolly explains the price. Pity, it would make a lovely 3000 SF home with an awesome 7000SF heated garage!

Great setting for a Freddy Krueger movie.

When we were house hunting 5 years ago we viewed a house remarkably similar to this, a pit managers house built around the same year, and the previous residence of Tony Blair PM. The large detached flat roofed garage was converted for his security team.
Certainly attractive for its spacious hallway & staircase, 4 lovely living rooms with period coal fireplaces, separate kitchen areas where the victorian staff would have been.
But it was showing its age, damp, roof maintenance needed, and then there was the fact Blair had lived in it.

Well, my father's parents' house, now my aunt's house, set to be her son's house in the fullness of time, is a traditional 2 story house, c. 1920. I think it's very elegant. I think the same thing of this house, but, yes, the interior desperately needs some kind of coherent renovation.

That alone would have ruled it out for me. He's a world-class piece of slime.

@Steve-Miller Yikes! It is one of those "great potential but soooo much work" places!

I love the front/outside, but just looking at the photos (those drop ceilings... carpet, industrial toilets).... makes me tired.
