In the age of cloud computing, it's easy to forget that IBM (NYSE: IBM) still sells its hulking mainframe systems. Following IBM's fourth-quarter earnings report, it's clear that the mainframe business is not only surviving but also thriving.

Here's an incredible fact IBM CFO Jim Kavanaugh disclosed during the earnings call: IBM's mainframe business recorded its best fourth quarter revenue in more than 20 years. Revenue soared 61% year over year, adjusted for currency, driving a 17% increase in the infrastructure segment.

The more things change the more they stay the same. Makes sense that they are useful for AI.

What's next? HP telling the world the Cray Supercomputer business is picking up again?

Possibly. All just tools, and it depends on what job you need done.

IBM was the main employer in Duchess County, NY. It eliminated and reduced its production to the extent Dutchess County's economy was decimated. The mid-century prosperity was gone.

Some time later NYC shuttered its vast network of psychiatric facilities and facilities for the developmentally disabled. The economy took a second nosedive.

Public sector compensation was slashed around this time as well.

Now where there used to be convenience stores, video rental store, and mom and pop restaurants, there are pay day loan outfits and pawn shops.

The real estate hasn't crashed. My best guess is people from the City view it as a bargain especially because the Metro-North computer rail infrastructure still exists and remains fully operational.
