U.S. Magistrate Judge Lindsey Vaala expressed confusion and surprise at some points during the seven-minute court session when a federal grand jury impaneled in Alexandria, Virginia, returned the indictment of former FBI Director James Comey Thursday night.

According to a transcript of the proceedings obtained by CBS News, Judge Vaala asked the newly named interim U.S. Attorney Lindsey Halligan — a former Trump personal lawyer — why there were two versions of the indictment..

    It gets even better….

This should be fun. Fitzgerald is very well known around here.

The man enlisted to save James Comey
Patrick Fitzgerald has taken down the mob, convicted governors and prosecuted international terrorism cases. Now, he's coming out of retirement to defend his longtime friend.

Judges can throw out a grand jury indictment for serious procedural fuck-ups.

              From the NYT:

The first few days in any new job are always hard, but Thursday was especially tough for Lindsey Halligan, the newly installed U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia.

She had to navigate an unfamiliar courthouse, make her first-ever appearance in a criminal case and, on top of all that, indict one of President Trump’s enemies.

Ms. Halligan, who took over on Monday after her predecessor quit rather than prosecute James B. Comey with what he believed was insufficient evidence, had a little trouble with the first two tasks. At one point, she entered the wrong courtroom. When she found the right one, she stood on the wrong side of the judge, then appeared confused about the paperwork she just had signed.

Analysis from Ty Cobb, a lawyer from the first Trump administration.

                https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025/sep/28/ty-cobb-trump-james-comey-indictment

                An unrelated aside:

In yet another bizarre social media episode for Trump, he posted – and then deleted – an artificial intelligence video in which his likeness was promoting magic medical beds that a far-right conspiracy claims can cure any ailment. The video depicted Trump touting a card guaranteeing access to new hospitals equipped with such beds.

And they thought Biden was losing his marbles….
