Doesn’t bode well for the Strategic Crypto Reserve.

@Bernard I had that exact Underwood typewriter. I gave it to a friend when I moved away from NYC. I have two other typewriters still--a Smith Corona 1962 manual with a jeweled escarpment that I wrote my first magazine articles on in the 1980s. And a Smith-Corona electric that my uncle gave me when I graduated from high school. Both are portables. The manual typewriter came to me when I lived in the wilderness and didn't have any electricity. My supervisor brought it up to me by mule. I'll never let go of that one. I once read an essay by the author of "Bel Canto" that finding her old manual typewriter was like finding the axe that she used to build the house she lived in. Very much how I feel about mine.

Feature, not bug. You make government inefficient then dissolve it due to inefficiency. Textbook, this.

I know of it, but have never had it. I'm not a fan of kombucha. I don't know how it compares to kvass/gira. I've seen the commercially prepared kvass in various international grocery stores in my area. From the article it sounds like those products are not an accurate reflection of the original product. "Gira, for all its refreshing qualities, can be a bit of a mischievous drink," Eidukevičius adds. "There's a running joke in Lithuanian households about 'gira explosions' because it ferments in closed containers where enormous pressure can build up like a bottle of Champagne. There's nothing quite like walking into a cellar and finding gira sprayed across the walls and ceiling like some kind of fizzy, rye-bread-scented geyser. It's a testament to how alive this drink is. It's a reminder that we're working with natural processes, and sometimes, those processes have a mind of their own." Mr wtg's grandparents had this happen to a batch of beer they brewed. Instead of using metal caps, they pounded a cork into each bottle and put the bottles up in the attic to "age" a bit. Hilarity ensued.

This was reported (I think it was the FT) and caught my attention as the article said their new battery takes 4 minutes to charge giving over 400 miles range.

Another vote against reusing old strings - ultimately going to cost you more over the long haul. I know Chicago is a different market from yours, but you might want to explore and see if another institution or individual might have a suitable piano replacement. Over the past 3 years I've seen some amazing things offered here. In one case, it was Baldwin SD10 for $1,500 - and in better than decent shape - but they needed it out - IMMEDIATELY. I thought wrong thoughts for a moment. In another instance, someone literally offered two Steinway Ds for free - allegedly - but who knows - in useable condition. Still, you might want to put the word out to techs in the community if there's an older philanthropist who might have a suitable instrument that could be used. You could either keep the current D until you have funds to do more work - or sell it to someone who could restore it to its old glory. When I'm no longer able, I would like to donate my piano to someone with talent but without funds - and even provide some funds to maintain just to see it have a happy home. Of course, that assumes that our current President doesn't ruin the economy - and we have to trade the piano for eggs.

I see @Cindysphinx log in a few times a week; she was here yesterday but hasn't posted anything since mid-February.
